Offered here is a nearly-perfect, original Victor recording of Helen Kane's hit songs, Me and The Man in The Moon (21830-B) and Don't Be Like That (21830-A), released 12/20/1928.
Please disregard the "ACCEPTABLE" item condition that is shown above. I did not select it when I listed this record, and for some reason, am not able to change it.
This record would be classified, condition-wise, as being in "E" grade, which is considered excellent. That means there is virtually no trace of groove wear, with only minimal traces of use and handling. It is actually even a bit better than that, but I will abide by the accepted standards used by professional record collectors. The pictures, while not doing full justice to this record, should give a good idea of its condition. Even the label is nearly flawless, with none of the usual spindle scars you would expect to find on almost any record that has been played. Both sides play beautifully, with a rich, clean sound not often found in old recordings. This exceptional disc plays as nicely as it looks, and even the original Victor sleeve is included.
.....And a Little about Helen Kane:
Helen Kane (1903-1966) was a native of the Bronx section of NYC, who began her professional career with the Marx Brothers at the age of 17. Several years later, in 1927, she started to appear in Broadway musicals, the most pivotal for her being a 1928 show entitled Good Boy. It was in this musical, with a song by the title of I Want to Be Loved by You that Kane introduced her signature "boop-boop-a-doop", which subsequently found its way in some form, into most of her recordings. At the height of her fame, she also appeared in several novelty musical films for Paramount Studios, beginning in 1929.
Coincidentally, as her popularity began to wane in the early 1930s, animators Max and David Fleischer (also associated with Paramount) created the Betty Boop cartoon character, which borrowed heavily from the personna of Kane, with a bit of Clara Bow thrown in for good measure. Ironically, the voice chosen for Betty Boop was that of Mae Questal, a first-prize winner in a contest of Helen Kane impersonators. A lawsuit launched by Kane against the Fleishers for plagiarism netted her nothing. Adding insult to injury, Betty Boop quickly became a cultural icon, while Kane, just as quickly, fell into virtual obscurity.
It would not be until 1950 that Kane would regain fame when she was called upon to supply the voice for her character in the movie Three Little Words, a biography of songwriters Harry Ruby and Burt Kalmar, who penned, among others, Kane's first and biggest hit song, I Want to Be Loved by You. Newcomer Debbie Reynolds "lip-synced" the song, playing the role of Helen in the movie. It was from this point on, that Helen Kane reclaimed her once-lost popularity and gained the admiration of several generations of music and movie fans worldwide. That renewed interest in her life and times still shows no signs of letting up, even forty-plus years following her death, and six decades after her final musical performances.
