Label / Year / Details - Mosaic Records, MR5-118, MONO, 5 LP Box Set, oriiginal recordings from 1955 - 1956, issued in1987. With large glossy booklet containing text & pictures.

Vinyl Condition - LPs look barely played & are in NM- condition, booklet is sharp with some very minor creasing.

Jacket Condition - VG+ (very light scuffing, almost NM-)

Description - Not just a musical wonder, the Mosaic Herbie Nichols Box is also a masterpiece of musical research, archiving, and excavation. Pianist Herbie Nichols' music is as bold & distinctive as Monk's or Bud Powell's, yet totally different. Five glorious sides - mostly piano trios with Art Blakey or Max Roach on drums and Al McKibbon or Teddy Kotick on bass. It's worth noting that 24 of the tracks on this massive compilation are Previously Unissued! Extensive liner notes by Nichols himself (including original poems), Michael Cuscuna, and Roswell Rudd - Rudd's notes include personal recollections of Nichols by Max Roach, Archie Shepp, Shiela Jordan, Steve Swallow, Gil Melle, and others. Booklet also contains rare photos and a complete discography.

This box set is from the collection of the noted music critic and writer David Prince.

SHIPPING: I use LP mailers and corrugated cardboard inserts. ALL boxes marked FRAGILE and DO NOT BEND. I insist that INSURANCE be purchased for LPs ending at a price >$50 US (Domestic US Customers only).

Overseas Customers - If you are paying more than $50 for your LP, I will insist you have it sent via REGISTERED AIR MAIL. Otherwise, I shall not be able to accept PAYPAL as a form of payment.

GRADING: I follow the GOLDMINE method...

Still Sealed (self-explanatory) - I don't like to sell sealed LPs.

Mint (M): Absolutely perfect in every way, opened but never played.

Near Mint (NM or M-) A nearly perfect record with no obvious signs of wear. The LP jacket has no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable defects. No cut-out holes, cut corners, etc.

Very Good Plus (VG+) A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK". The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.
The LP jacket may have slight signs of wear, and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount.

Very Good (VG) Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches that will affect the sound. Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.

For me, anything below VG is not worth selling on E-bay (unless it's some sort of Mega-Rarity). The bottom line: a VG record must still be an enjoyable listening experience, despite its flaws.
