ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP from Unicorn (RHS 310, English pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features violinist Ralph Holmes in unsurpassed accounts of Frederick Delius' Violin Sonatas No. 1 (1914), No. 2 (1923), and No. 3 (1930), recorded at St. Giles Church, Cripplegate, London on 20 and 21 March 1972 (producer: Gavin Barrett / engineer: Bob Auger). He is accompanied throughout by pianist Eric Fenby, who acted as the composer's amaneunsis from 1928-1934.
The liner notes are by Eric Fenby himself and he plays Delius' own piano, which was bequeathed to him upon the composer's death.
Incidentally, the intriguing cover photo reproduces a scene from Ken Russell's film "Song of Summer", in a scene showing Delius (played by Max Adrian) and Fenby (Christopher Gable).
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping to the two lower corners, as well as some minute instances of discoloration, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and handsome in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT – overall, this is a superb collector's copy.
