Although not quite reaching the heights in sales as the two albums that preceded this - the debut Lungs and Ceremonials - this Mercury-nominated corker from 2015 still sold well in excess of a million copies and was number one in eight countries. For this album, Florence Welch was encouraged by her producer Markus Dravs to transition from obscuring the natural timbres of her voice and expose it for what it is. She landed at a more earnest place and was a lot less grand than Ceremonials. For instance, she wrote more directly about her personal life than on previous albums, as the hard rockin' single 'What Kind Of Man' - about a melodramatic love affair - shows. Welch palpably conveys - with anger, with excitement, the serotonin fluctuations that come with being in an unstable relationship. Music at its best is about conveying feeling and few are able to pour so much of themselves into a song and make it sound so convincingly real.
