Description

If I could put together a British free-jazz dream trio of piano, bass and drums, I'd invite Howard Riley, Barry Guy and Tony Oxley ... just like on this brilliant trio LP from 1974 with all three on sizzling form at the height of their inventive powers!

Yes, it's been reissued on CD, but this is the original glossy black vinyl edition recorded in the BBC's Maida Vale studio in London in October 1973, and released as Incus 13 in 1974. There are four tracks, all credited to Howard Riley, and devised for this recording. In his notes on the reissue, Riley describes the blend of composition and improvisation: "This trio used both open-form (i.e., totally improvised) and set-form approaches. This recording concentrates on the latter. The use of graphic frameworks mixed with conventional musical notation, which still allowed freedom for the improvising musician, was something we were all familiar with."

You're probably familiar with the three musicians: Howard Riley on piano, Barry Guy on double bass and bass guitar, and Tony Oxley on drums and amplified percussion.

LP and sleeve are in VG+ condition – that's following the grading rules on Discogs: broadly that means that the LP has been played and handled by an owner who took care of it; that any defects are cosmetic; and that there may be signs of wear, slight scuffs, light scratches which don't affect the listening experience.

Copies of this great record have sold on Discogs for a median price of nearly £85, though the only copy sold since 2014 just sold for £112.15 on the 28th March. We have moved house, and we're currently in rented accommodation where I no longer have the ability to play or the space to house my collection of jazz and free-jazz LPs, so I am offering this beautiful LP for £79. Grab it while it's available! One click and it's gone – and it's also listed on another site at a higher price! [And I have a long list of LPs to sell, so please get in touch if you want to influence which I sell next!]

The LP will be carefully packaged in a proper reinforced LP mailer and posted within the UK for £6.95 p&p. If you'd like it sent abroad, please contact me before bidding so we can agree a price which includes tracking and a signature to get it safely to you [I've already sent LPs to Belgium and Austria], or it will come via Ebay's own international delivery service.
