The Real Folk Blues (12" LP, 1964/1987) Chess/MCA CH-9273 Outstanding Condition. No Unusual Wear.
The album that probably made Wolf a fortune. Not from Chess Records, but from the covers by British Blues bands that followed. Cream famously covered "Sittin' On Top Of The World" and Led Zeppelin infamously covered "Killing Floor" (before changing the name to "The Lemon Song" a move they dearl paid for later). Gorgeous package that has been on my shelf, undisturbed, for so long it's embarrassing. Save for a nubbed corner and only the FAINT beginnings of a ring (more of a vinyl "dent"), this looks like it could have just come out of the plastic. EXCEPT that it's a PROMO (gold stamped in the upper right on back, see pic). Clean and sweet. You'll be pleased. Buy more vinyl and save on shipping (when paid for at the same time). Features Willie Dixon, Hubert Sumlin, Sam Lay and other greats. 4-1/2 STARS from the All Music Guide, who say simply... "every track is pure Chicago blues at its finest." ALL MUSIC GUIDE 4-1/2 STAR REVIEW In the mid-'60s, Chess Records released a great series of compilations of '40s and '50s singles by some of its best blues artists, all of them called The Real Folk Blues. The Howlin' Wolf entry is possibly the best of the batch, and one of the best introductions to this mercurial electric bluesman. Opening with the savage "Killing Floor," the album doesn't let up in intensity, and it happily focuses on Wolf's less-anthologized sides, which gives the album a freshness a lot of blues compilations lack. From the sly "Built for Comfort" and "Three Hundred Pounds of Fun" to the apocalyptic "Natchez Burning," every track is pure Chicago blues at its finest.
