Howlin Wolf – The Real Folk Blues – 1966 – Following the success achieved by British bands like The Rolling Stones, Animals and Yardbirds by playing the music of unsung Chicago blues artists, the Chess label decided to compile tracks from their greatest artists originally released on singles. They all had the same name, The Real Folk Blues, followed by More Real Folk Blues. They released collections by chess stalwarts Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson and Memphis Slim (and also John Lee Hooker who seemed to record for everyone). This album by Wolf is an absolute gem. Featuring Howlin Wolf originals plus a few from house songwriter Willie Dixon, Wolf is in top form, growling through brutal tracks like Killing Floor and Poor Boy. And Wolf’s version of Sitting on Top of the World (so impressively covered by Cream) is mind-blowing.  She’s gone but I don’t worry, I’m sitting on top of the world.
