NEW ACOUSTIC SWING DUO (Han Bennink and Willem Breuker)
Their rare 1st record on the highly collectible ICP label! Dutch pressing on the ICP label (I.C.P. 001). The record and the sleeve are in mint condition.
ICP was set up by Dutch musicians including Willem Breuker, Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg 35 years ago to further the cause of free improvised music in Holland.
They borrowed the phrase 'instant composition' from guitarist Jim Hall, and it still sums up the philosophy behind European free music pretty concisely.
To quote saxophonist Evan Parker, 'Improvisation is a process which defines its own form.'
Back in the late 60s it wouldn't have been too much of a cliché to characterise free playing in Europe according to its country of origin.
UK music was pointilistic, and emphasised quiet interactive group playing. German music (particularly as played by the large hairy Peter Brotzmann) was loud and raucus.
Dutch music typified by Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg (the main men behind the Instant Composers Pool) often involved daft tunes, and much pulling of rugs from under peoples feet - musically speaking at least.
The Instant Composers Pool orchestra has always been an extension of the Bennink/ Mengelberg Duo. Skewed tangos, animal noises, and apparently incompetent tenor sax solos - particularly by Ab Baars.
Willem Breuker, soprano, alto and tenor saxophones, Eb clarinet, bass clarinet; Han Bennink, bass drum, small and large tom toms, street parade drum, snare drum, tabla, banya, vibra pan, home made rattles, cow and temple bells, Chinese 7" giant cymbals, scraper, Chinese temple blocks, hi-hat, iron and wooden sticks, voice.
