Label/Format: Harvest – The ultimate original with the ‘The Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the rims and no EMI references. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both beautiful clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a couple of light, faint and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These are near reference standard, one for the connoisseur.

Cat Number: SHSP 4001.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. A very fine and typical weight for this record.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Very Rare: I consider this to be one of the most elusive and difficult albums to ever find on the highly collectable Harvest label. A label that specialised more in ‘progressive’ music, this was not typical material for Harvest and it remained a strange ‘one-off’. It sold poorly and is highly sort-after by fans of Tina Turner, Harvest label collectors and completists. In terms of condition, this record is near unbeatable and looks and sounds fantastic. Not only that, this is one of the very first off the production line and for collectors this is a rare opportunity to own this elusive and desirable (and musically excellent) album. To put into context, I have had the Pete Brown titles, the Shirley & Dolly Collins, Tea & Symphony, Bakerloo, Battered Ornaments, Quatermass, Panama Limited Jug Band, Forest (both), Greatest Show on Earth albums – all Harvest rarities – more times than this. A copy in this condition is immensely difficult to track down.

Original Year of Release: September 1970, a late one in the catalogue to be pre-EMI.

Brief Info: A very rare album and the one that started the Harvest SHSP series in September 1970. In the USA they signed a two record deal for Blue Thumb Records but in the UK this one-off was issued on Harvest. I have never found this easy to find and this has always proved elusive. The opening title track will be very familiar to rock fans, yes ‘The Hunter’ is the same song made famous by Free and Tina gives it her special treatment. This set is predominately bluesy with soul funk elements, not usually my type of music but this was a pleasure and indeed surprised me somewhat. This title sold poorly, very poorly in fact, hence its genuine rarity – for such a major name in music surprisingly so and this probably remains one of Tina Turner’s rarest ever albums as well as Harvest’s. I can hardly imagine ever finding a better or earlier example either, the fully laminated cover is highly attractive with few blemishes and the record in truly beautiful condition. Little short of connoisseur standard, this is a very rare opportunity to own this most prized Harvest gem.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a fully laminated single format that printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Lamination, Front & Back: Very clear, fresh and with lovely rich shine with minimal traces of friction rubs – both sides look very impressive indeed. Under light, a dull rim impression is seen, but few will be lighter and barely any will avoid this as a bare minimum. All is fully adhered with little more than a couple of light creases each side – with normal viewing, these hardly even show. The somewhat bizarre mannequin artwork will rarely be seen much better than this and unless total perfection is mandatory, this will take a huge amount beating.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both practically as made and very straight too.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. The odd minor burr trace or two when viewed ‘end-on’ but any thickening is very slight indeed. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Superb: solid but made quite thin, straight with minimal traces of any compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid, uncracked and very clear laminate – this too, well centred on limited depth. Even this remains rich shine and clarity, and my fingertip test proves no scuffs or cracks.

Corners: All incredibly neat, undinked with any tip rubs tiny. All retain excellent to near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very scarce early 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better (not easy to find this one at all). This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the original Harvest promotional inner is also included in almost as impressive condition. Hardly any real wear, but some mildish darkening of the adhesive on the seam edges that few avoid. Still clean looking with barely any creasing with the lining still intact. All edges unsplit – the corners are vented in manufacture – and has no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): critically graded, this is a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence this has nothing more than a few very fine and faint surface traces and hairlines that just catch bright, angled light. A much better copy of this major Harvest rarity will not be found easily. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This outstanding and rare Harvest record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely a surface sound was noticed at all and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. With so few available copies of this album out there, this copy could prove near impossible to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Do not lose this one.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
