Description

Illes:Human rights                 PEPITA SLPX 17410.

The 1971 album came in a white sleeve and was a beat oratorium /A side:24'30/ dealing with human rights and dedicated to the black American activist Angela Davis.Doesn’t really matter though, because the music makes this a must-hear anyway.  And if the band was fully cognizant of their Beatles thievery, they sound absolutely stoned on the peyote-fueled trippy psychedelia haze of “Elinduló.”  You don’t need to speak a word of Hungarian to hear the thick paisley smoke that envelops every guitar chord in this one – truly inspired slide guitar licks that sound like they’ve been bent and distorted on the tape, like some cosmic alignment between the Faces “Around the Plynth” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Sun.”  Elsewhere, the heavy percussive foundation-shaker “A Legnagyobb dobos a világon” rips walls down with just vocals and drums – lots of drums.  And while I won’t ever claim that four young white boys from Hungary can lay down the funk with the likes of vintage Parliament-Funkadelic, I will say that there are moments on Illes’ White Album where things do get pretty funky, in an Eastern European Sub-Carpathian kinda way.  There’s some mighty de ep funk bass on “Te kit választanál,” which also benefits from an insanely catchy melody.  And the funky acid rock riff and raw-throated vocals that anchor “A Kati jött” might lead you to think this was a translated export version of the first Quicksilver Messenger Service album.  But for real honest-to-goodness mescaline-fueled Maharashi head zones, drop the needle down on the lost sitar headswirler “Approximacio,” and see how George Harrison might’ve sounded lif he had grown up alongside the Danube.  This is a near-perfect carbon copy of George’s trippiest moments with the Beatles, a heady mix of “Blue Jay Way” and “Within You Without You”, all sitar drones and muffled tablas, stoned distorted megaphone vocals severely stuffed into the right channel, and an otherworldly chorus of wailing background vocals hovering just behind the haze, all twisting and weaving through your cranial synapses like tiny puffs of smoke from a mushroom-dwelling caterpillar.   Strange to hear something so distinctly Beatlish being sung entirely in a strange semi-Cyrillic language, but if you’re really gonna venture through the looking glass, the other side should sound this alien.  Sure would like to know what it all means, though.

The record is in VG+ condition and the cover is VG+ too.
