INDENTERMINANCY
John Cage / Reading David Tudor/ Music Folkway Records # FT 3704 Released in 1959 2 lps-both in very good condition housed in box w/ awesome descriptive notes booklet in excellent condition.
New aspect of form in instrumental and electronic music-
The idea behind Indeterminacy was, like many Cagean ideas, essentially simple and audaciously original. Cage read 90 stories, his speed determined by the story's length. In another room, beyond earshot of Cage, David Tudor, pianist and veteran Cage collaborator, performed miscellaneous selections from Cage's Concert for Piano and Orchestra and played pre-recorded tape from Cage's Fontana Mix.
Play tested every track on both albums. Only noticed a few minor pops. No skips. Minor visual signs of use one very small flaw that you can also feel with your finger. I personally could not hear any distractions when listening closely to the track where this appears.
Plain white sleeves have no tears.
The booklet of typed descriptive notes and photographs is in excellent condition.
As for the box, the artwork looks great. However, it was stored in the bottom of a box with many records stacked on top it, which caused damage to the top of the box leaving one lip to become detached and is now missing. Box top has splits in the corners. The sides of the bottom of the box are intact but obviously affected by the weight that was put upon it.There is some minor discoloration from age and signs of shelf wear i.e. rubbing and wear on edges. The black paper on bottom of box isn't completely smooth. It could be due to age or perhaps a flaw in the manufacturing (see photo)
I myself, nor the Previous (original) owner made any attempts at personalizing the contents of this listing i.e. stickers & writing. No attempts to repair the box have been made. I have only brushed the dust off the box. I used a cotton chamois cloth without any spray prior to playing.
This record is from a very interesting collection I inhereted, all of which were well taken care of and appreciated for decades. Ironically, the popular records appear as if they were never played and experimental records like this were respectfully enjoyed over the years. There were no plastic sleeves on any of the records so they were a bit dusty. A proper cleaning before playing is suggested I would have done it but I don't have a cleaner kit at the moment.
