Description
Unknown artist (The Inmates) - "Immitation Alligator" - National Recording Studios, Inc (730 Fifth Avenue Plaza, New York, NY) original one-of-a-kind 10-inch one-sided metal acetate test pressing of professionally recorded guitar based garage rock 45 from 1967 (sound file above). There are no matrix numbers and no artist credits. Record is Near Mint. Label says "Studio 'A' Produced by Tommy Falcone 9.11.67." The band is uncredited but is actually the mid 60's Long Branch, NJ band The Inmates. Came from the collection of a New York City area disk jockey. Apparently never commercially released. Nice!
The Inmates were all members of Long Branch High School. They won the state-wide band contest in 1965 and were awarded a COLOMBIA recording contract! Instead of releasing Imitation Alligator, Colombia decided to go the novelty route and released the 45 "Local Town Drunk" B/W " You Tell Lies". The 45 didn't chart and they were dropped but, not before recording an LP's worth of material which today exsists only on acetates, the master tapes having disappeared in the '70's when their manager Tommy Falcone died. Lead by Drummer Sammy Falvo, Propelled by Bobby Nolan's Firey Gretsch Country Gentelman they crazied the Jersey Shore (mostly Long Branch and Asbury Park) teen scene from the theaters and beach clubs, auditoriums and outside, in the open air of Garfield Park. Along with other Jersey Shore based bands like the Tiki's, The Mods, The Ascots and The Castilles they electrified the mid to late '60's night clubs like Asbury Park's The Pillow Talk, The Student Prince, and The UpStage Club. The Inmate's Colombia 45 is pretty rare itself. Re-released in the 1980's on Greg Shaws Pebbles Records, Volume 51. They also had two previously unreleased tracks on the Pebbles Box set, but not this one.
