Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and trackable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks or traces very fine and faint. Apart from some inner sleeve dulling to side two, this record’s surfaces are fantastic and it plays the same.

Brief Info: The second Iron Butterfly album and one that really got them noticed. This sold well in their native United States and proved moderately successful in the UK. It helped form a new sound in music, blending psychedelia with a heavy rock sound. Side two being occupied with the famous title track. This an impressive UK original that appears only very carefully played and includes a stunning, cover-protected sleeve. As every UK copy of this I have ever heard, it has a gentle sound in the pressing, but this is barely even evident on the music areas, only heard between songs. I can honestly state, I have never heard a UK example without it, but be assured this album sounds superb and if a UK original is wanted, it’s simply a trait of this album. Although it does have some fairly mild inner sleeve dulling on side two, it has NO affect on sound whatsoever. That simply being a common trait of a vintage record being left undisturbed for many years inside its original polylined inner sleeve, unless severe, it’s usually harmless, and here only seen under light.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): but actually looks even better, only marked down a few spine edge hairline creases that are always hard to avoid totally. A single format with front laminate, this covers all folds and ends on the rear spine edge. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, London, includes the 1968 date-coded Philips style inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Apart from half-a-dozen or so fine spine edge creases and a single half moon surface crease, this beautiful front is virtually as-made. The laminate retains fantastic shine, freshness and clarity with hardly any lifting or dulling. This front will not prove easy to find much better or with fewer clues of its age.

Cover Back: Again hardly aged at all, the white card with only minuscule traces of any discolouration. Few blemishes at all bar again, a few very fine hairline creases on the spine edge that hardly register on the laminate end. The lack of ugly grubbiness and ring wear being major pluses.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both very thin, but superbly straight, smooth and totally unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Incredibly sharp with barely even a trace of thickening. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: In terms of wear, barely any, a central fine crease has weakened it very slightly. Overall, still quite solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are pinched in manufacture. The text is unworn under the solid and clear laminate.

Corners: Barely any tip wear or creasing at all with near mint shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: The few spine edge fine creases apart, a superb example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This, by a distance the freshest and cleanest, most age defying example I have seen. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the Philips polylined inner sleeve is date-coded 098 (September 1968) and has two British Patent numbers (800513) / (973939). Mildly aged with quite light discolouration of the paper, but still with two immaculate window circles and the polylining reasonably clear and attached. When held to light, the patterning trait can be seen, this very common indeed on these polylinings where the record has been left dormant for decades. This has a mild semi-crease to one corner, little else with all edges are naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. This grading based purely on the lack of usage or handling marks. As stated, this does have fairly mild inner sleeve dulling patterning on side two that has nothing whatsoever to do with usage. In fact, the very opposite applies, it’s a common occurrence for a record that has been left unremoved from a polylined inner for many years. In most cases totally harmless and seen often, especially on Philips inner sleeves. So my grading does NOT take this trait into account. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any usage surface traces minuscule. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers (bar the mild inner sleeve dulling). Visually still a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quite groundbreaking and famous 1960s album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault bar the very low level contact sound within the pressing that has been on every UK plum label copy of this album I have ever heard. As stated, only heard on silent moments, e.g. joining grooves, the music areas seem unaffected (or simply lost). This super copy offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any other surface sounds are minuscule with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record, the music is simply superb. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
