An impassioned, urgent portrayal of the Black experience in the U.S., alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins’ 2020 opus

Though he’s only 22, Immanuel Wilkins’ Blue Note debut is the kind of album that has people throw around words like masterpiece, and for good reason: it sounds like it was composed and played by an artist who’s road-tested and done his 10,000 hours. It’s also politically relevant — the songs capture the mood of Ferguson, Missouri, and the horrific lynching death of Mary Turner — and Wilkins’ playing is affecting and engrossing. It’s like attending a seance to wash out all the bad shit we carry, a therapeutic album in the form of 63 minutes of adventurous, swaying jazz.
