Here's a unique opportunity to acquire a much-acclaimed performance of J S Bach's complete sonatas and partitas. These three vinyl 12" LPs and their sleeves are in near-mint condition, and the box itself has only minor shelf marks on its edges. The included information leaflet is unmarked and creaseless. The boxed set was acquired when it was first released in 1983 on the ASV label [ASV ALHB 306], on the recommendation of "Hi-Fi News" record reviewers. Even today, nearly 30 years later, these performances still attract the highest praise. In this month's BBC Music magazine, we find Lawrence Dutton saying that for him, the power of this recording comes from [Shumsky's] extraordinary sense of structure, and also his rhythmic ability, which is on a level with the greatest of jazz musicians. As an example, he asks us to listen to the sonata in A minor, in which Shumsky's ability to carve out the pedal notes and sing the melody as if there are two separate violinists performing. Praise indeed from a professional viola player! Only first-class equipment has been used to play these discs, and they have always been handled with the greatest respect.
