**TWO ORIGINAL 1973 CANADA ONLY LPs**

**JACKAL**

**AWAKE**

Jackal was formed in 1969 by the Kellesis brothers (Chris on keyboards and Jack on bass) with high school friend Charlie Shannon on vocals. They filled out the ranks with several other members in their infancy while playing the b-circuit around Toronto.

They wrote some material while developing a progressive, psychadelic hard rock sound, and were seen by Art Snider one night in a bar, who quickly signed them to a management and recording deal. Snider, a native of Ottawa, was behind the record company Chateau Records at the end of the 1950s and founded Sound Canada Studios in '67.

With the band rounded out by guitarists Steve Hayward and Dave Bernard, and drummer Lois Mutton, they worked with producers Dan Goldberg and Bob Stright in the spring of '73. They became one of the first acts to record for Snider's new venture, Periwinkle Records, releasing their debut album, AWAKE a few months later. The bulk of the writing on the eight tracks was done by the Kellesis brothers, with Hayward penning two himself - the tempo-changing flowery-acid trip "Sunny Side Of The Day" and "Lost In The World."

Heavy in sound, the band was likened to early Deep Purple, Rory Gallagher, Budgie, and fellow Torontonians Warpig. The songs relied heavily on fuzz guitar effects mixed with a raspy delivery from Shannon and often extended keyboard and organ solos front and centre. Other noteable cuts included "How Time Has Flown," "In The Heavens," and the title track.

No singles were released, contrary to Snider's motif operandi - whose labels were renowned for churning out acts on a steady basis in the hopes of landing 'that one big hit.' But with Jackal's songs more often than not exceeding the usual three-minute frames to get any airplay, and with little money to fund promotions or tours, the album quickly disappeared and became a collector's obscurity.

Within a year or so of its release, the band also drifted into oblivion, with the members picking up new gigs in different bands off and on, but then eventually all got day jobs and left the business all together.

A very rare and beautiful album from Canada (1973). Members of Freedom North and Mashmakhan founded this short lived outfit and a wonderful mixture of soft and melodic Rural Rock with some Folk and Westcoast touches is on offer.

It is quoted in several publications that Riverson was one of the best albums out of Canada in
those days and you will surely agree after listening to this brilliant work

There is some confusion concerning the problems with these pressings. Info from Patrick Lundborg (R.I.P.) about this which can be read on lysergia.com. In his posts, He suspected that the first pressings had the skip on A6 whereas the second pressings did not. The author of the post owned a second pressing with the skip and then bought a first pressing without. The truth is that both pressings exist with and without the pressing defect. It's still a mystery which makes this great record even more desirable.

This copy has NO skip on Side A Track 6

PLEASE READ: GRADING AND EVALAUTION

Grading records is not a ‘Scientific’ exercise, instead it is a subjective activity. I do my best to listen carefully to both sides of the record before grading based on the listening experience. Flaws, if any, that I hear will be reflected in the grade rating, and if noteworthy, will be mentioned. The nature of how records are played (i.e. physical contact between the moving grooves and the stylus tip) makes it a medium where flaws are often inherent in the process. Also, please keep in mind that there may well be subtle differences between turntables. Records are not the ‘sterile’ medium of CDs. Flaws generally range from somewhat normal quiet background noise in run-ins between tracks to more serious issues such as pressing flaws, groove wear, skips, repeats and long scratches producing consistent ticks or pops.

I try to follow a grading system similar to Goldmine where I will have NM, NM-, VG+, VG, VG- etc. I may also have combinations such as VG+/NM-. Generally, I do not sell records below the VG+ rating unless somewhat rare, in which case I will point out the issues.

If, after purchase, you find disagreement with my grading I would ask that you contact me FIRST. For example, if I have graded NM and you feel that at best the record is VG+, please, rather than leave a low rating (3 stars or less) for “Item as Described” let me know. I am not perfect and will do my best to remedy the situation.
