Her story is one of the most legendary of all twentieth century musicians' stories, and also, one of the most tragic. Cellist Jacqueline Du Pré, born on January 26, 1945, in Oxford, England. She blossomed young and achieved international fame in a few short years during the mid-1960s, during which same time she joined Daniel Barenboim in one of history's most celebrated musical marriages. But her career was shattered in the early 1970s -- not even a decade into its maturity -- by multiple sclerosis. Even today, there are music lovers out there who get wet-eyed over the thought of cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Who can blame them? Not only was she a stupendous virtuoso, she had a warm-hearted tone and a strong-muscled style.
This 3LP box set contains Ludwig van Beethovens' five cello sonatas. The performances were given at the 1970 Edinburgh Festival at Usher Hall and were first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on: 20 Nov 1970 (sides A, C, D, E), 25 Dec 1970 (sides B, F). The set also includes a 4 page booklet.
