Description
An amazing artifact – an autographed cover of James Brown’s Please Please Please album, signed and inscribed by Mr. Brown himself. NO LP, only the autographed cover. James Brown’s note and signature rides down the right side of the front cover and reads, “To Jullian From James Brown out (of) Sight”, written in ink pen. A true gem.
On the left of the front is another signature that I’ve tried to decode for eons without luck: “The best to you, --- ----- of the Flames”, also in ink pen. I’m not an expert on the Godfather and his clan, but I have researched well and not found any Flames’ members’ names that come close to matching this name, which appears to be “Jim Pehly”, “Jim Bebly” “Jon Behly”, something along that track. Any help would be appreciated.
Obviously, though, the centerpiece is Mr. Brown’s inscription and signature. Rarely does one see the combination of an early LP cover found with both a note and a signature from James Brown. All indications are – the cover’s release date, the reference to ‘the Flames’, and Mr. Brown’s “Out of Sight” – that this cover was signed late in 1964 or early in 1965.
Aside from the wonderful writing on the front, the cover is in very nice VG condition, with only some light mottling and two 4½” seam splits (top and bottom) to report. The cover presents beautifully from the front and the back. Again, only the autographed cover is being auctioned – no LP included.
Any prospective bidder can be assured that the signatures on this album cover are genuine and vintage, dating from the middle 1960s.
