Very rare sound document on the Opus One imprint featuring the Steiner Electronic Valve Instrument, a trumpet-based synthesizer controller, plus experimental techniques & many more.

Some info on the release:  Very rare release on the american Opus One label (that released also works by John Cage, Barton McLean, Daniel Goode, Lou Harrison, Barre Phillips, Joel Chadabe, Garrett List, Frederic Rzewski, Harry Partch, Gordon Mumma, Annea Lockwood, J.D. Robb and others). Features 2 pieces by James C. Sheppard's with his "Echo In Amber" being maybe one of the very few recorded pieces written for the Steiner Electronic Valve Instrument, - aka EVI - a trumpet-based synthesizer controller (a must for retro synth freaks out there). While the other side is occupied by female composer's Denise Ondishko "Without and within" featuring prepared piano a la John Cage and quite a few more experimental techniques, making this one a unique sounding album.

Denise Ondishko studied at Carnegie Mellon University and the Eastman School of Music. Her teachers included Joseph Schwantner, Warren Benson, Barbara Kolb, David Hogan, and Leonardo Balada. She has done extensive research into the work of computer music pioneer Paul Lansky. She has taught composition at the Walden School and Oberlin Conservatory. In addition to her compositional work and research she has also developed a parallel career as an information technology management specialist and has headed IT and telecommunications departments at several large institutions, including the University of Rochester and Hunter College at City University of New York. Denise Ondishko's works cover a wide, eclectic range of genres, including solo piano, solo violin, wind ensemble, saxophone and piano, chamber ballet, childrens theatre, elementary school band, and a number of works for live instrument and computer-synthesized tape. Her chamber ensemble work Without and Within is recorded on Opus One records, and her Rush for percussion quartet and tape was premiered at the International Computer Music Conference in Montreal. She has also received prizes and awards from BMI, the US Federation of Music Societies, and the Eastman School of Music.

James Sheppard had instruction in composition includes study under a fellowship with Philip Bezanson at the University of Massachusetts (M.M. 1968) and further work with Richard Hervig and Donald Martin Jenni at the University of Iowa (Ph. D. 1975) where he was a Composing and Performing Fellow with the Center for New Music under William Hibbard.

Since 1978 James Sheppard has been a member of the music faculty at Miami University where he teaches composition and directs the electronic music studio. Since 1983 the composer has been active as a performer upon electronic wind controllers such as the Electronic Valve Instrument, adding the Morrison Digital Trumpet in 2005. Reviews of his compositions and performances using wind controllers and computer audio resources have appeared in Musical America, Perspectives of New Music, and the International Trumpet Guild Journal. The composer is represented on vinyl recordings by Echo, in Amber and Luminaria on the Opus One label, #126 and by an earlier release, Cat Dreams of Flying on Opus One #85. Another composition Snowfall is recorded on a CD by Michele Gingras for Societe Nouvelle D'Enregistrement SNE-631-CD. Awards given the composer for his music include a Research Challenge Grant in Electronic Music Composition from the State of Ohio, several Individual Artist Fellowships in Composition from the Ohio Arts Council, a Charles Ives Center for American Music Fellowship and several Miami University research and composing appointments and continuing awards from ASCAP. In 2001 he received fellowships for residencies at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Sweet Briar, Virginia.

Quite close to  Lejaren Hiller, Roger Reynolds, Alvin Lucier and of course David Behrman, Larry Austin, Jerry Hunt, Glenn Branca, Bruce Haack, Phil Niblock, Charlemagne Palestine, Noah Creshevsky and Charles Dodge.
