Jan & Dean's Command Performance album was recorded on September 17, 1964 at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. This was the very same venue where the Beach Boys recorded their Concert album just a few weeks earlier (August 1, 1964). The announcer was their friend and frequent songwriting partner Roger Christian, Hal Blaine conducted the stage band. mostly Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew members, who give remarkably spot on backup comparable to their singles. It's a really good concert album, recorded in good sound and really capturing the fun and excitement of their live show. It was one of their biggest-selling albums.
Of course there is screaming. This is the first summer after Beatlemania hit and released a wave of screaming that never let up throughout a concert. Before this time when teen idols would appear on American Bandstand or other shows there would be some swooning, shrieks and a scream or two, but only when they came on and nothing like the total hysteria released in 1964. The Beach Boys Concert album is full of it too. At least the sound engineers were able to capture the musical part of the show even if sometimes audience members didn't. The Theme From the T.A.M.I. Show (From All Over the World) was added to the album later because the concert was coming up on January 3, 1965, and is the studio version with screams added.
The recording is only about 35 minutes long. That was pretty reasonable for a vinyl LP back then. They do five of their songs and include a nice assortment of the hits of others. Of course they do the Beach Boys: their big hit of the summer, I Get Around, is here, as well as Little Honda which was almost a Beach Boys single until Brian lost faith in it and pulled it, leaving it open to be a hit for the Hondells. Their nod to the old rock'n'roll is All I Have To Do Is Dream by the Everly Brothers. Rock and Roll Music was a hit for Chuck Berry in 1957 and was coincidentally to appear on the Beatles '65 album. Of the moment was I Should Have Known Better from A Hard Days' Night and Manfred Mann's Do Wah Diddy which Jan admits is a new one they're just trying out. Dean gives the Skateboard demonstration that was part of their TV appearances as well. Everything ends with, what else, Louie Louie, a certain crowd-pleaser in 1964.
I'm glad they recorded a Jan & Dean concert because they were known for their live shows and it's a nice memento of the era. This would be Jan & Dean's last big album. Jan had been lucky: they were a middling doo-wop group who had an occasional #25 hit before he met Brian Wilson and decided to jump on the surf and car bandwagon, which made them superstars. By late '64 the surf and car song thing was clearly waning. He tried one new thing after another without much success and the the car crash ruined everything. But this is 1964 and Jan & Dean at the top of their popularity and a great way to remember them.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them.
(b) The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.
(c) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP
(PLEASE NOTE: THE SHRINK WRAP HAS SEPARATED ALONG ABOUT 20% OF THE OPENING SIDE, BUT THE ALBUM IS STILL VISIBLY SEALED)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. (nothing significant)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
