Ride the Wild Surf is one of the two best Jan & Dean albums along with Drag City. It's no accident that Jan got to produce both albums the way he wanted without much interference by Liberty, a label that only wanted product to move out fast and that didn't trust their artists' musical choices. Jan liked the albums to have a concept and got his way easily this time since it had to be built around the title song. Seven of the twelve tracks deal directly with surfing, eight actually, since walk on the wet side is a genuine surf instrumental. The rest of the tracks are surfing peripherals dealing with summer, skateboarding and girls. There was a push to get it done fast since the film was released in August, but Liberty still sent Jan & Dean out a summer tour, so it came out in September.
As usual the songs and production involved the whole Jan & Dean Mafia including Brian Wilson (who co-wrote four of the songs), Jan's girlfriend Jill Gibson and her frequent songwriting partner and Jan's old high school friend Don Altfeld, L.A. car enthusiast and D.J. Roger Christian and backup singers and now songwriters Steve Barri and Phil Sloan. Lou Adler was usually hovering around in the background but he had trusted Jan with producing the albums for a long time now. Gary Zeleky is the only new name on the songwriters credits. He wrote The restless Surfer and would later write Yellow Balloon, and finally The Wrecking Crew were there as always as the Jan & Dean backup band.
Ride the Wild Surf itself was a dynamic and powerful surf song, one of the best in the whole genre from its exciting guitar opening to its final "Gotta take that one last ride." As a single it should have been much bigger than it was (it peaked at #16) since it was absolutely prime Jan & Dean and they were on a run of Top 10's since Surf City.. This was probably an indication that the whole surf thing was pretty much over, rather than a comment on Jan & Dean. The Beach Boys left surf songs behind in '63 and Ride the Wild Surf would be the last surf hit (unless you want to count New York's a Lonely Town by the Tradewinds in early '65, but that was more of a novelty song).
Dean got a rare lead solo on The Restless Surfer, a Gary Zeleky song originally called Other Towns Other Girls that Gary gave new lyrics for the album. Jill sang with Jan on A Surfer's Dream.a song she wrote with Don Tell 'Em I'm Surfin' was a clever Barri and Sloan song that they had released under the name, "The Fantastic Baggies": being rushed by Liberty to get the album out, Jan actually used their recording and overdubbed his own voice in lead, with their consent, of course. She's My Summer Girl made it for the same reason; it had been the B-side of Surf City but had never made it onto an album. The Skateboard was in its first year of invention and Jan and Dean not only included two related songs but also included Dean demonstrate it in their shows. The adaptation of Catch a Wave was brilliant, and Dean recorded Jan on a skateboard for the sounds on the songs. As usual there's a comedy bit with Submarine Races, one of their more clever outings

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Stereo pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies by a ratio of at least 10:1.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
