Starting in 1966, Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company became accidental architects of what would be known as the San Francisco Sound. During that important cultural watershed quaintly referred to as the Summer of Love, they provided an unruly, party-tastic link between the cool, cerebral music of the Jefferson Airplane and the psychedelic covenant of the Grateful Dead.

CHEAP THRILLS: One of the most eagerly anticipated as well as most successful releases of 1968, Cheap Thrills finds Janis Joplin once again alongside Big Brother And The Holding Company on what was her major-label debut and last with the band. The record made Joplin a star and remains a central touchstone for 60's psychedelia and blues rock. Shooting straight to #1 and achieving gold status within months, Cheap Thrills not only had the hits in "Piece Of My Heart" and "Summertime," but it also happened to sport one of the most famous covers of all-time with Robert Crumb's pop-art album design. This 180-gram audiophile reproduction of the original LP from Legacy Recordings has been sourced from the original mono master and comes housed in a gatefold jacket meticulously recreated from the original album art and featuring the original track-listing.
LIVE AT THE CAROUSEL BALLROOM 1968 is a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a “Bear,” who supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident on March 12, 2011. The release of the album marks the one-year anniversary of his passing and is dedicated to Bear. This is Bear’s unique vision – how he heard the band live, and how he wanted to transmit it. From the very specific (non)stereo mix, to the cover artwork he commissioned from Stanley Mouse, to the liner notes written by those who knew Bear best, this truly is Bear’s presentation of this phenomenal band and inspirational music.
