IN CONCERT - THE ORIGINAL LABEL PRESSED RE-ISSUE PRESSED AROUND A DECADE AGO & OUT OF PRINT. This Double LP Collection is from concerts with Big Brother and the Holding Company and Full Tilt Boogie - All Is Loneliness - with Big Brother was an inspirational vehicle for Joplin unlike any other and no other performance of this tune which conveys the terrifying loneliness is even remotely similar. The version here was recorded at a 1970 reunion with Big Brother and Janis“there ain’t no tv, no radio, no nothin’ man” simply rips your heart out. We are also treated to the improptu 12 bar blues of - Ego Rock - where Nick Gravenites and Janis toss blues lines back and forth in an affectionate but competitive repartee.
Janis was looped during the outdoor gigs with Full Tilt - a lot of Tequila went down the hatch on the festival train that puffed its way across Canada in July of 1970. It was four months before Joplin died and her Calgary performance of - Ball and Chain - is inspired, brilliant, drunk, uncanny and frightening. It is like work from the other side. Also included on this LP are - Down On Me - Bye Bye Baby - Piece Of My Heart - Road Block - Flower In The Sun - a cover of Gershwin’s Summertime - Half Moon - Cosmic Blue - Move Over - Try Just A Little Bit Harder - Get It While You Can. That is exactly what you should do with this Audiophile Masterpiece.
FAREWELL SONG - THE ORIGINAL GENERATION 180 GRAM RELEASE FROM THE ORIGINAL LABEL PRESSED AROUND A DECADE AGO.
This Collection features Janis Joplin with Big Brother And The Holding Company, as well as live with The Kozmic Blues Band. There is also a tear down the walls cover of Etta James TELL MAMA with Full Tilt Boogie recorded live in Toronto. ther highlights include a studio recording of ONE NIGHT STAND (produced by Todd Rundgren) and a marvelous rendition of Sam Andrew’s poignant FAREWELL SONG, taken from a 1968 Winterland Show. Ending the LP is Joplin’s killer CATCH ME DADDY taken from a CHEAP THRILLS Session.
This is one of Janis Joplin’s most inspired studio vocals and is tremendously interesting to hear the instrumental track that brought out such an incredible performance. Other songs included are MAGIC OF LOVE - MISER-N - HARRY - RAISE YOUR HAND - and a medley - AMAZING GRACE/HIGH HEELED SNEAKERS.

JANIS MOVE OVER 45 SINGLES BOX SET -
This box set is a fantastic , innovative idea into keeping Janis Joplin's musical legacy alive into the 21st century. It has 4 45rpm singles, all in newly designed picture sleeves , plus a postcard photo and a replica of Janis' tattoo. Best part of the box are the unreleased versions of 6 of the 8 songs. All are chronologically placed in the box with Big Brother & The Holding Company on the first single with a STUDIO version of MAGIC OF LOVE from March 1968! Who knew a studio version existed, as only live versions have been released so far. This is similar to the live versions, but a totally different version of it in the studio. B-side is a live version from April 1968 of CALL ON ME with more Janis ad-libs than other versions and a longer guitar solo. These both come from the fervent , and very productive early CHEAP THRILLS sessions.Singles 2 and 3 are devoted to Janis' 2nd band, The Kozmic Blues Band with PIECE OF MY HEART and SUMMERTIME in different live versions in 1969, similar to the live concert footage from the 1975 " Janis " film documentary , and different than the version of SUMMERTIME found on the double " JANIS Soundtrack/Early Performances " album that same year. Single 3 are live versions of RAISE YOUR HAND and BO DIDDLEY that were previously issued on the " RARE PEARLS " CD as part of the " BOX OF PEARLS " box set of all 4 original albums.
Single 4 is another big discovery - early versions from August 1970 with The Full-Tilt Boogie Band from the beginning of recording sessions for PEARL. As with all the tracks in this box set, they are in mono. MOVE OVER is a totally different version, with many more lines, especially at the end of the song. MY BABY has most of the same vocal that appears PEARL, but with surprises, and is not the same version as found on that legendary album. The sticker on the back cover says " Coming Soon - The Pearl Sessions ". So, Columbia still has different Janis recordings in their vaults, after all these decades. As with MAGIC OF LOVE, who knew we would ever hear these long buried recordings. This kind of release is most welcome, especially for the legion of long-time fans, as well as keeping the music & Janis' history going. I see that the estate is now overseen by the same person who does the same for The Doors. This set is a great addition, with the bonus of these tracks being only vinyl for collectors and are in mono. But, it sounds very promising with another Janis release coming soon. This vinyl box is a treasured keepsake, and I'm very glad that Columbia saw to release. Keep the Janis rarities coming. Big Brother are primarily remembered as the group that gave Janis Joplin her start. There's no denying both that Joplin was by far the band's most striking asset, and that Big Brother would never have made a significant impression if they hadn't been fortunate enough to add her to their lineup shortly after forming. Starting in 1966, Janis and Big Brother and the Holding Company became the accidental architects of what would be known as the San Francisco Sound. During that important cultural watershed quaintly referred to as the Summer of Love, they provided an unruly, party-tastic link between the cool, cerebral music of the Jefferson Airplane and the psychedelic covenant of the Grateful Dead. They were one of the bands that best captured the era's loosest, reckless, and indulgent qualities in its high-energy mutations of blues and folk-rock.
Columbia/Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the release of Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded June 23, 1968, at San Francisco's Carousel Ballroom by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a.k.a. "Bear." Stanley supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident on March 12, 2011, in his adopted homeland of Australia. The release of the album marks the one-year anniversary of his passing and is dedicated to Bear.
This is Bear's unique vision — how he heard the band live, and how he wanted to transmit it. From the very specific non-stereo mix, to the cover artwork he commissioned from Stnaley Mouse, to the liner notes written by those who knew Bear best, this is truly Bear's presentation of this phenomenal band and inspirational music.
"What is key about these moments captured by Owsley is that they're a true representation of what this mythic band really sounded like live," notes rock scribe Jaan Uhelszki in her essay on Janis and Big Brother's enduring ability to astound and surprise. "The rough magic, the explosive synergy, the dangerous frisson of boundaries being demolished between artist and audience....these 14 songs are a testament to what a force of nature Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company was during these two nights at the Carousel Ballroom. Showing them at the zenith of their considerable power."
