·       PLEASE NOTE: WHILE, ON THE FACE OF IT, THERE'S NOTHING PARTICULARLY UNUSUAL ABOUT THIS RECORD, THIS IS, IN FACT, A COMPLETELY ABERRANT, IF NOT DOWNRIGHT BIZARRE, PRESSING -- FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. LET'S START WITH THE COVER: THE COVER HAS FRONT AND BACK SLICKS REVERSED (FRONT SHOULD BE WHERE THE BACK IS AND VICE-VERSA, WHICH MEANS THAT THE OPENING SIDE IS FACING THE WRONG (LEFT) SIDE AND THAT JANIS'S PHOTO APPEARS ON THE BACK SIDE, WHILE THE GROUP IS SHOWN ON THE FRONT SIDE!. THEN, THE RECORD ITSELF: FIRST OF ALL, THE RECORD HAS DEEP GROOVE ON BOTH SIDES, WHICH NO COLUMBIA PRESSING HAD HAD SINCE AT LEAST 1962. SECONDLY, THE PRESSING USES THE SO-CALLED "SMALL" LABEL, WHICH DOES NOT COVER  THE ENTIRE LABEL AREA. THIS LABEL - WHICH IS TYPICALLY FOUND ON LATE '50's JAZZ AND BLUES LABELS SUCH AS RIVERSIDE OR CROWN - WAS NEVER USED ON ANY COLUMBIA PRESSING, OF ANY VINTAGE,  EVER! FINALLY, THE RECORD IS EXTRAORDINARLY THICK, SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL NEVER SEE ON THIS TITLE. IN VIEW OF THIS, WE SUSPECT - BUT HAVE NO WAY OF PROVING - THAT THIS WAS AN UNAUTHORIZED "INSIDER " PRESSING BY ONE OR MORE OF COLUMBIA'S STAFFERS OR A DISLOYAL DISTRIBUTOR.

Janis Joplin's final album , released just days after she passed away - was barely finished when it came out. Still, it is one of the best showcases of her massive talent and vocal prowess on record, and - by universal acclaim - one of the top-50 Rock and blues albums of all times. The album includes no less than four top-10 charting hits, including Janis' timeless rendition of Kris Kristopherson's "Me and Bobby McGee", no less than three (3) covers of Jerry Ragovoy's deep soul ballads (two originally performed by Garnett Mimms & the Enchanters and one by Howard Tate), plus songs by Bobby Womack, John Hall, Penn-Oldham and Janis herself - her immortal "Mercedes Benz".

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship,  revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, this album was voted one of top-100 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted in 1987 by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals   (click here  for the complete album listing)

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (NOTE: a visible AND feelable scratch affects about one half of "Move Over", may cause a series of clicks and pops)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (BARELY VISIBLE)
