This is a JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF JAPAN DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET RADIO STATION COPY NOT FOR RESALE
The tunes in this album are personal impressions from the Quartet's tour of Japan, Spring, 1964.
No one in a brief visit can hope to absorb and comprehend all that is strange to him.
Sights and sounds, exotic in their freshness, arouse the senses to a new awareness.
The music we have prepared tries to convey these minute but lasting impressions, somewhat in the manner of classical haiku, wherein the poet expects the reader to feel the scene himself as an experience.
The poem only suggests the feeling
TOKYO TRAFFIC An hour out of Tokyo the stewardess of JAL came to us with a message to deplane first, as we were scheduled to play a concert immediately on arrival.
Wondering if I were another Phileas Fogg, who had forgotten the international date line, I looked at my contract, checked with the stewardess, and everything added up to one day early.
Nevertheless, we were met at the airport with the news that an SRO audience was politely waiting our arrival.
Obviously, they knew we were to open a day early, even if we had not been informed.
A police escort was on hand to usher us into the city.
The ensuing wild ride was a terrifying experience.
We were soon to discover, however, that it was unique in its mildness.
A drive through Tokyo traffic without police escort is sheer insanity, and all the police escort had succeeded in doing was to slow our drivers down.
Tokyo traffic is a New York rush hour filmed at high speed.
The crazy kaleidoscope glimpsed from a car window was our first impression of Japan.
The next night I told the guys to follow me on a new tune, which had resulted from this first impression.
The audience responded well to this first Oriental influence they had heard from us.
We decided to call the piece Tokyo Traffic.
