Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A heavyweight pressing that even will exceed most the very first issues.

Rarity: A -1E / -1E first pressing on the new orange label will prove even more difficult to find than a first issue. Finding one in such stunning condition will prove even harder and this is a superb pressing as well. The beauty of a slightly later pressing is more avoided heavy usage on heavy tracking record players, and I am seriously asking myself, if this one had actually been played at all.

Original Year of Release: 1968. With these matrixes, this would have been from 1969 to 1970.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Jefferson Airplane were generally more appreciated in their native US than the UK which is a real shame because they made some of the most stunningly brilliant music in the mid to late 1960s. They remain one of my favourite American bands of the entire 60s and this is one of their very best albums. This is a classic and challenging record as they left behind the psych folkiness of Surrealistic Pillow on their way to surreal acid-rock, this is mind-bending experience full of wonderful stoned music with sublime vocals from Grace Slick, still for me anyway, rock’s premier league female vocalist. Her voice has such power and authority, few come close to matching her. An album of great charm and charisma, there is not a dull second to be had, even the instrumental jam ‘Spare Chaynge’ which sounds stunning when played at volume through a large system. Amongst the excellence on offer, three standout songs are Kantner’s brilliant ‘Martha’ and Slick’s bizarre ‘Two Heads’ and ‘Rejoyce’. Even the record company did not treat this band well in the UK, the covers, although laminated, were inferior to the US versions with no inserts, inners or gatefold formats, even the tracks changed on the previous album, sacroligeously omitting the masterpiece ‘White Rabbit’. This UK sleeve gives little information away at all and cries out for an insert, but it failed to materalise here. Both record and cover are little short of immaculate so jump aboard and enjoy the trip…

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format, laminated with Clarifoil on the front. This wraps around the spine on to the back for around quarter of an inch on the spine. Printed and mde in England.

Lamination & Front: Superb artwork is seen to near maximum advantage through ultra clear, fresh and shiny laminate that has no lifting and barely any hint of dulling – a mere trace around the rim near the top seen critically under angled light. A few very fine and faint edge creases the one tiny chip on the top. A lovely example that will prove hard to find better.

Cover Back: Very prone to ageing, toning and grubbiness and rarely escapes heavy ringwear and creasing. This one is superb and has little to fault at all – any grubbiness or marks are almost minuscule and barely a crease to be seen. This 40+ year-old back gives hardly any clues to it’s age at all and is a joy to view on both sides.

Top Edge: A couple of tiny scuff traces, felt with the fingertip more than seen by the eye. Very straight and clean.

Bottom Edge: Practically as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and very sharp with barely any wear or thickening at all. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: An equally impressive spine: solid, straight and with any compression slight. All text is perfect and unworn under the very solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Super shape retained and barely any rubbing worthy of mention.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this fragile late 60’s/very early 70s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This attractive psych sleeve should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and only marked down for a little natural darkening. Unlined with two immaculate window cirlces, no creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb record that is very clean, shiny, intense black and a very impressive 150 gram weight that exceeds even most originals. Hardly a noteworthy mark to be seen, the odd surface trace if scrutinised very closely under bright angled light. Visually this will please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super record plays up to it’s impressive visual grading with little to fault. Strong sound, if not that loudly recorded, it has no groovewear distortion or pressing noises, a factor never to be taken for granted on any RCA record at this time. Pressing standards post-Decca were variable and that is not putting too fine a point on the fact – I have heard some shocking pressings on this label, but this is NOT one of them. All frequencies are sharp and clear and without any doubt, this record has hardly been played. I heard no pops or significant clicks and pressing quality is high with any surface sound traces tiny, few and faint. Few of these will ever play totally silent not jut due to the format and some quiet passages but because it does need more volume to enjoy the inherent details of the music. This rare -1E/-1E copy will prove very difficult to find better and merits my strongest recommendation.

End Piece: One of the greatest 60s rock bands ever, their music was pure class and even today still thrills me to listen too. Hearing such a clean early copy is extra special, it can be a nervous play-grade on RCA, as often pressing quality is iffy. Pressing noises and sounds being the invisible factor of these records. I have often found the early Bowie albums on this label to be a nightmare amonst others. The volume level is always a factor too as this needs to be played a little louder than most. The likelihood of groove wear and sound distortion is always a worry, but here it proved largely unfounded. This did not disappoint me at all and remains a very fine copy for sound and looks and that being played on a hugely revealing turntable. If like most, this bypassed you all those years ago and your collection is still missing this title, it’s one I can strongly recommend. The 1960s Jefferson Airplane were very special indeed with one of the greatest female rock vocalists ever and material uncompromising and totally brilliant. This copy does it splendid justice.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
