5 stars out of 5  ...An acid symphony full of extended pieces conjoined into suites, with high flying hymns to liberated times delivered forcefully by the Airplane's vocal troika...
~Rolling Stone  (09/18/2003)

"After Bathing At Baxter's" is a one-of-a-kind, acid-stoked masterpiece. The LP was released in 1967 as their third album. Unlike Surrealistic Pillow, released earlier the same year, After Bathing at Baxter's is considered pure psychedelic rock because it eschews the more commercial type pop song structure, such as "Somebody to Love," on the earlier LP. As such, it was a watershed album; San Francisco acid rock progenitors Jefferson Airplane were now a much heavier rock group. Jorma Kaukonen's electric guitar was especially more to the forefront in both volume and tone ...expanding his sound with regular use of feedback and distortion.

Divided into "suites,"Baxter's" is woven with longer and more experimental compositions, such as the nine-minute instrumental "Spare Chaynge" and Grace Slick's mammoth and unusual "Rejoyce," an homage to James Joyce's novel Ulysses, with its quirky arrangement and Jack Casady's stentorian bass line. Many of the album tracks reflect the Airplane's heavy use of LSD during the sessions. Only their LA folk-rock rivals, The Byrds, would ever display such a blatant commercial disregard for its audience.

"After Bathing At Baxter's" has passages of utterly amazing instrumental virtuosity (particularly bassist Jack Casady on "Watch Her Ride" and "Rejoyce"), inspired harmony vocal arrangements (by Paul Kantner on "Ballad of You & Me & Pooneil", "Martha", "Won't You Try/Saturday Afternoon"), alternatingly lyrical and ferocious guitar phrasing (by Jorma Kaukonen on "Wild Thyme", "Martha" and "Last Wall of the Castle", an astonishing slashing and chiming guitar pyrotechnic showcase that rivaled anything heard from Jimi Hendrix or the Who that year), and stellar lead vocals (Grace Slick on "Two Heads" and "Rejoyce" and Marty Balin on "Young Girl Sunday Blues"). Spencer Dryden hauled out an array of percussive devices that was at least twice as broad as anything used on the previous album.

What emerged was one of the rawest, most in-your-face records to come out of the psychedelic era -exciting and enveloping in long stretches, yet elsewhere enigmatic and abtruse - delightful in its most fulfilling moments, which were many, yet sometimes veering into the acid fringes and untred territory, and amid all of that, very often beautiful.

This is an album for musicians, singers, artists and those with musically adventurous tastes. It is as aggressively sonic as any Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators or Sonic Youth recording, especially considering that it was recorded in late 1967! The moods, tempos, rhythms and outrageous inventiveness of the arrangements puts it in a league of its own. For all serious music lovers.
