One of the great wonders of Rock’n’Roll History, this beautiful, minor-key album from the winter of 1966/67 represents - by universal acclaim - one of ten or so most brilliant achievements of contemporary music. Boosted by Jerry Garcia’s presence and "spiritual advice", Balin, Kantner ,Slick and the crew sing 11 songs of love, mystery and loss (including classics like "Somebody to love" and "White Rabbit"), which strike a resonant chord, even now, 40 years after the album was recorded. Now, here’s what’s interesting about this album. This is the original, punchy, vivid MONO mix!!!! For those of you who are unfamiliar with the mono mix of this album, there is a consensus among Jefferson Airplane aficionados and audiophiles alike, that the MONO version is THE ONLY PROPER way of listening to this work of art. Unless and until you have heard this album in MONO, you've never heard it at all!!! Needless to say, the mono version of this album fell between the cracks soon after it was issued.

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). (a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)            The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)             Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)              Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL GLOSSY, LIGHTLY LAMINATED, COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner) [about 1/8 x ½ inch in size]

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No split seams

-         No ring wear

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No wrinkles or creases

(g)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(h)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Previous owner delicately taped the opening edges of the cover wiith a piece of transparent scotch tape (we are not sure why, but we suspect that the tape can be easily removed). The tape is inconspicuous and does not visually offend the cover.

-         Visible shelf wear noted on all three seams (top, bottom, spine) and some fraying/tattering on the bottom seam.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side)

-         Back cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
