Comments: Early and hard to find Nitzsche related 45. As this was released in early 63, co-producer Lester Sill was still partner with Phil Spector in Phil-Les and Steve Douglas was in the process of establishing himself as one of the best ever sax studio musicians in LA. There is indeed some great sax playing, including solos on each side, and I can only assume that it’s Steve Douglas at work.
Young Jessie, or as he was born, Obediah Donmell Jessie, had an interesting career on the West Coast, recording both on his own and with various groups including the Flairs and the Coasters (four of their 45’s in 57/58 are listed as the Coasters feat. Young Jessie). Around that time he also recorded one solo 45 each for ATCO and Atlantic. This was his third of four 45’s on Mercury.
A-side is a bouncy up-tempo soul number with a style leaning towards New Orleans, while B-side is a slow to mid-tempo rock/R&B number. Talking about New Orleans, it’s just been announced that Jessie will appear at this year’s ‘Ponderosa Stomp’ in New Orleans end September.
