Label/Format: Chrysalis – early green format with the Island catalogue number and logo, both have a matt smooth finish. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both mainly clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks fine, faint and on the lighter side of moderate. A small gentle handling trace on side two near the 3 o’clock position.

Cat Number: ILPS 9123.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. A very good weight for this record and most will be found thinner and significantly lighter.

Brief Info: The third Jethro Tull album now with a heavier, more rocky sound. Less lauded by many being sandwiched between the stunning ‘Stand Up’ and the very popular, more progressive sounds of ‘Aqualung’, this is actually one of my personal favourites and including some fantastic songs. Early pressings of this album were made on the green Chrysalis label and included the i logo and ILPs number (as per this one). It was also pressed on the Island pink rim label, these are quite rare but are not first issues. This one played a few times, but for most, it still offers very clean and pleasing sound with a little worn ILPS cover.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the correct Island ILPS number and prefix. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: A few mainly light surface creases but lacking the usual rubbing and wear most seem to acquire. It retains deep colour with few marks and is one of the better ones I have seen for a while.

Cover Back: The back is pretty much the same, most of any tiny rubs on the corner tips and the lack of ring wear always a significant bonus.

Top Edge: A small rub near the right corner, all else very light and faint, this still straight.

Bottom Edge: Very light patchy rubbing on a vulnerable storage edge, they seldom get seen with less.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with only a little wear with gentle thickening or very mild burring as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression very light, the ends are nipped in manufacture and these retain very fine definition. The text is fully present with no wear and the white surface remains clean.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover, especially with a thicker, heavier early-made record inside. This is still impressively attractive and should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: a polydor white inner that is date-coded 0970 (September, 1970) within 4 to 5 months of first issue (seen in close-up). Darkened with age and the original lining replaced with a very soft anti-static replacement. One corner crease but all edges unsplit with no repairs and the window circles neat with the odd tiny nick.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks very fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light, these mostly on side one. Visually a lovely vintage record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Jethro Tull classic plays mostly above it’s visual grading with little to fault. A little gentle, patchy crackle on the final song, but the rest offer strong, distortion-free sound and quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any other surface sounds are minimal indeed and this early copy does play very well. A copy played several times but with it appears with due care and little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive album, the imagery and detail at times almost breathtaking – I rate this title highly and it remains one of my absolute favourites by this ever-popular band. Not for the perfectionists with the odd gentle reminder it is a 43-year-old record being played rather than a squeaky clean digital version, but it will take an exceptional one to better this significantly, so it merits high recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
