Label/Format: Island – First Press pink format with orange eyeball logo and heavily textured, very matt surfaces with deep ridge.

Label Conditions: Both in magnificent condition and real eye-candy for any Island collector. They have a beautiful pastel pink hue and barely a spindle mark to be seen. The sheer beauty and fresh of these labels has to be seen for real to be fully appreciated.

Cat Number: ILPS 9103.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. A very impressive weight for this record.

Rarity: Quite rare as a genuine first pressing, the orange eyeball format was changed within this year to the pink ‘block’format and then again to the pink i style that is the most familiar of the ‘three pinks’. Most are seen on the pink rim or later formats and this I deem even rarer than the ‘This Was’ debut on this label as it was available so very briefly.

Brief Info: Within the genre of ‘classic’ rock, there are few better albums than this second Jethro Tull set. Everything about this album is perfect – great songs, sublime packaging, fantastic sound and performance and issued on one of the best labels ever – no collection is complete without a copy of ‘Stand Up’. Following the brilliant debut album, Mick Abrahams departed for form Blodwyn Pig, this was never going to be easy, but the band rose to even greater heights. Beautifully packaged with it’s ‘working’ pop-up woodcut design cover, the details on the front are little short of remarkable as I hope my close-up pictures show. Musically, for me anyway, this is Jethro Tull’s best album, not a second of wasted time, every track is sublime and beautifully recorded too. Blending heavy and mellow songs with gorgeous instrumentation including strings, the details hidden within these vintage grooves are never-ending. The ultimate first pressing with a very heavy, thick record with deep wide grooves with no space wasted on the playing areas. This offers very impressive sound quality that has no distortion and little unwanted. This can never be taken for granted on these types, an album with many flute parts and this instrument often can distort or clip on overplayed copies, and let’s face it, many, if not most of the early ones were. Often used on less than worthy equipment that often damaged those delicate grooves. This one is fully focused, sharp and clear and most fans of genuine classic rock will enjoy this lovely copy that includes an unusually clean cover with the pop-up feature totally pristine and undamaged (please see close-ups). The main area, as many collectors will know is the back. This is very rarely seen devoid of significant grubbiness and discolouration. This one has to be one of the very best I have seen for a considerable time.

Cover’s Potential for Wear (and Damage): Very high. The delicate pop-up bends and tears easily and always nice to see one in pristine condition. The cover’s back is seldom seen devoid of heavy grubbiness, ring wear and ageing and this has barely any – few will ever avoid it especially with the heaviest pressings inside all these years. This is an exceptional all-round copy that gives full justice to this evergreen classic.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): which hardly does this full justice. An unlaminated gatefold format with the original ‘pop-up’ cut-out feature inside (this is beautiful and little short of as made). Printed and made in England, uncredited.

Cover Front: One of those rare occasions where I can actually state ‘a front with nothing to fault’. This is absolutely stunning with incredible detail, freshness and beauty. Nop creasing, no grubbiness and if I really have to nit-pick, must a tiny rub on the bottom right corner tip. Even when viewed with utmost scrutiny, there is barely any hint or a mark or blemish. One or rock’s great cover fronts in remarkable condition – this too with a 160 gram record inside for 43 years.

Cover Back: Now to one of rock’s most unforgiving backs: this is rarely seen devoid of major grubbiness, ring wear and wear. Although not pristine perfect, this is still in fantastic condition and more than complements that wonderful front. Any traces of grubbiness are tiny, few and faint and just the lightest hint of a rim impression/faint rub near the left edge. Just to it’s right, a small press mark. This apart, there is little else to fault and finding this back better will prove very difficult.

Cover Inner Gatefold: I am not going to waste time and lots of text on this centrefold. Simply because it’s little short of pristine Mint as made. The pop-up feature is immaculate, folds up and down perfectly and is crisp, uncreased or thickened. This is simply unbeatable.

Top Edges: Barely any traces of wear at all. Maybe a hint of darkening on the white back but again, almost nit-picking.

Bottom Edges: A little light patchy rubbing on the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is very crisp and neat and practically unworn. The back opening edges are clean, quite sharp (the outer one, very sharp) with little wear. Any thickening or burring to the inner back light and mildd as seen viewed end-on. All edges are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: An exceptional spine that is practically as made as well. Unusually clean, very solid and straight with no compression. The cover is folded a little off-square meaning the edges are not flush but the spine is absolutely superb. All text is pristine perfect and totally unworn (rarely seen as such) and the white surface has not darkened to any extent at all. An exceptional spine for a very difficult cover (please see my text close-up)

Corners: A small tip rub on the bottom right but little else. Very fine to excellent (or better) shape is retained.

Cover Summary: One of the very best I have ever seen with a first pressed record inside. The sheer weight of the record usually means ring wear and rubbing and only the most carefully stored examples will ever show such little wear and lack of back grubbiness. With a superb perfectly working pop-up centrefold and impressive good looks, this will take some beating. Being manufactured a little off-square has nothing to do with wear and this is hardly unusual, but I will mention everything I feel is relevant so the highly discerning collectors can make their mind. This should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner in very fine condition. Clean and little aged with just one corner crease. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a top-quality heavyweight pressing with any surface marks few, fine and faint. A very fine hairline is seen on side one and odd very minor friction scuff trace, but few originals will have less than this. Very clean and intense black and retains a fine shine. So few records this great age escape without a tiny few surface marks (to say the very least) and this is still a fantastic and impressive record. It has no penetrating scratches and I feel sure it has been played very modestly, even little. You can imagine what many of these look and sound like when they do surface. Very thickly pressed with wider band width to glean the maximum details from those deep grooves. One that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic album plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this is a real hi-fi recording and a pleasure to listen too. Barely any surface sounds and no pops or significant clicks noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for (at times) a fairly demanding album. The early Jethro Tull band were truly inspired on this set and clearly the band themselves were delighted with it as stated on the cover. Beautifully recorded and produced with incredible instrumentation and Anderson never sounding better. Few copies will match or outperform this genuine first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and all remains focused, clear and precise with no clipping to those delicate high frequencies. Nothing spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation. Nothing beats the pleasure in holding and hearing a first pressed 1969 copy of this evergreen classic – this has remained one of my favourite albums of all-time since I first heard it way back in 1971 as a schoolboy. The copy I bought at the time being on the pink rim format.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
