Label/Format: Island – First Press pink format with orange eyeball logo and heavily textured surfaces with deep ridge.

Label Conditions: Both have a beautiful pastel pink hue and spindle marks are very fine and faint. In terms of number, well less than moderate. These textured labels are very hard and are not easily marked, so judging numbers is less easy. What is certain, both look fantastic with ultra clean surfaces and genuine fresh visual condition.

Cat Number: ILPS 9103.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 175 grams. A near mind-blowing weight for this ultimate first pressing – actually 10 grams heavier than the last such copy I offered..

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Quite rare as a genuine first pressing, the orange eyeball format was changed within this year to the pink ‘block’format and then again to the pink i style that is the most familiar of the ‘three pinks’. Most are seen on the pink rim or later formats and this I deem even rarer than the ‘This Was’ debut on this label as was available so very briefly.

Brief Info: Within the genre of ‘classic’ rock, there are few better albums than this second Jethro Tull set. Everything about this album is perfect – great songs, sublime packaging, fantastic sound and performance and issued on one of the best labels ever – no collection is complete without a fine copy of ‘Stand Up’. Following the brilliant debut album, Mick Abrahams departed for form Blodwyn Pig, this was never going to be easy, but the band rose to even greater heights. Beautifully packaged with its ‘working’ pop-up woodcut design cover, the details on the front are little short of remarkable. Musically, for me anyway, this is Jethro Tull’s best album, not a second of wasted time, every track is sublime and beautifully recorded too. Blending heavy and mellow songs with gorgeous instrumentation including strings, the details hidden within these vintage grooves are never-ending. The ultimate first pressing with a massively heavy, thick record with deep wide grooves with no space wasted on the playing areas. This offers superb sound quality that has no distortion and few unwanted sounds, any present being ultra faint, gentle and few. This can never be taken for granted on these types, an album with many flute parts and this instrument often can distort or clip on overplayed copies, and let’s face it, many, if not most of the early ones were. Often played on less than worthy equipment that often damaged those delicate grooves. This one is fully focused, sharp and clear and most fans of genuine classic rock will enjoy this lovely copy that includes an unusually attractive cover with the pop-up feature totally pristine and undamaged (please see close-ups).

Cover’s Potential for Wear (and Damage): Very high. The delicate pop-up bends and tears easily and always nice to see one in pristine condition. The cover’s back is seldom seen devoid of heavy grubbiness, ringwear and ageing and this has barely any – few will ever avoid it especially with the heaviest pressings inside all these years. This is an exceptional all-round copy that gives full justice to this evergreen masterwork.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with the original ‘pop-up’ cut out feature inside (this is beautiful and little short of as made). Printed and made in England, uncredited.

Cover Front: A superb and very fresh example of one of the most sublime covers ever made. The detail of the woodcut design cover is wonderful. Apart from tiny tip rugs that few will ever avoid, there is practically nothing else to fault. This early example has the yellow hue and the detail is almost breathtaking. No creasing or any note, grubbiness, sticker marks or ringmarks, what a gem this is.

Cover Back: This back is near impossible to find without some marks or grubbiness. Being white with a thick record inside makes this darken with ringwear and rubbing and is often very dirty. This is without doubt the very best I have ever seen with a first pressed record inside and shows barely any grubbiness or wear at all. Almost pinching myself to belief this is real, but believe me it is. Almost as white as when made with any record impression tiny and faint and the same for any creasing. The tiny few present are fine edge types that no example will ever avoid as the bare minimum. These are ultra rare seen this clean and more than worthy of a second look.

Cover Inner Gatefold: It’s rare that the inner gatefold is equally susceptable to damage as the outer, but in this case it’s more than true. The cut-out, that stands up erect when the cover is opened is very delicate and to find one with no bends or creases is unusual. The base is fully stuck down and rock solid with no blemishing or stresses (and NO repairs). Both front and back look superb with all the delicate cut out edges pristine, razor sharp, this stands up to attention perfectly and folds up the same (please see close up pictures of front and back). There is no damage, creasing, splits of tears, all the outlines are crisp and sharp with NO burring. The only tiny issue is a couple of very small glue smears in manufacture have pulled two tiny areas of the surrounding base card, a natural blemish that often happens on this one. Here so small, few would even notice and this is a really lovely example of this famous centrefold.

Top Edges: Very light rub traces on the dark front.

Bottom Edges: Light to light+ rubs on the same dark front. Being the resting edge, few will ever avoid a little, and little is the word here.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Very light thickening to the front with very minor and faint burr traces, see when viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: An exceptionally fine spine: very solid and quite thick, straight with no compression and folded square, both right edges meet up very closely together and parallel too. All text is unworn (rarely seen as such) and the white surface shows barely any darkening or ageing, an exceptional spine for a difficult cover (please see my test close-up)

Corners: The only evident tip rubs are to the black front set, but only small indeed. All retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: One of the very best I have ever seen with a first pressed record inside. The sheer weight of the record usually means ringwear and rubbing and only the most carefully stored examples will ever show such little wear and lack of back grubbiness. With a superb fully working pop-up centrefold, this is little short of connoisseur standard and will prove immensely difficult to find much better.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white, heavy duty polylined inner. This being firmly attached and clear as seen through two near pristine, crisp window circles. All edges secure with no repairs and only neat corner semi-creases. Some mildish darkening on the seams to give clues on it’s vast age. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: This a top-quality super-heavyweight pressing with a small few light surface marks that have NO effect on play. In fact they are totally ignored and the whole album plays with supreme sound with very little unwanted. Very clean and intense black and retains fine freshness and shine. Few records this great age escape without a tiny few surface marks (to say the very least) and this is still a fantastic and impressive old record. You can imagine what many of these look and sound like when they do surface. Massively pressed to glean the maximum details from those deep grooves. It’s one that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: My belt-driven Linn rarely struggles to get up to speed, but this one really did test it out with an extra second or two to make it. Records of this weight are scarce, even for a very first pressing and will be immediately apparent to any winning bidder. This beautiful record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this is a real hi-fi recording and a pleasure to listen too. Barely any surface sounds, the only minor traces on the fragile instrumental ‘Bouree’, but even here, minimal and faint with no pops or clicks noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for (at times) a fairly demanding album. The early Jethro Tull band were truly inspired on this set and clearly the band themselves were delighted with it. Supremely produced with incredibly instrumentation and Anderson never sounding better. Few copies will match or outperform this genuine first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and all remains focused, clear and precise with absolutely no clipping. Nothing spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find better for top-drawer audio quality and is highly recommended. Nothing beats the pleasure in holding and hearing a first pressed 1969 copy of this evergreen classic – this has remained one of my favourite albums of all-time since I first heard it way back in 1971 as a schoolboy. The copy I bought being on the pink rim format.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
