JETHRO TULL - THICK AS A BRICK

CHRYSALIS CHR 1003

Matrix Numbers, Mothers and Stampers

CHR 1003 A-3U  H  PORKY  1
CHR 1003 B-2U  T  PECKO

Vinyl weight: 150g - very rigid

Original Newspaper Sleeve

Matt green Chrysalis Label with bold printing

In my ownership since bought new circa 1973. Has been stored in a PVC sleeve (included in sale) in a closed record cabinet. Played originally on my father's Braun Radiogram and since the mid-'70s only on high-end Thorens TD 166 and Linn Sondek turntables fitted with A&R C77 and E77 cartridges

Gradings based on those of 'Record Collector' (see below for grading explanations)

Sleeve - estimated to be in VERY GOOD+ condition

Cover - White has remained bright and untoned. Several small fingermark scuffs on front and surface contact scuffs on back. No creases

Spine - Light grey fingermark scuffing along most of its length, uncreased with minimal wear

Edges - Fold down edge is scuffed along its length, top edge slightly so, opening edge has no card-lifting

Corners
- Bottom right-hand corner has a small tear and significant rounding wear. Bottom left-hand corner has an impact crease but is little worn. Top corners have slight wear but remain quite sharp

Newspaper Insert - completely undamaged, secure at the staples (unrusted) with no writing, marks, creases or scuffs. It has developed an overall light buff toning over time which is actually quite attractive. Other than this age-toning, the newspaper and adjacent interior of cover are essentially in 'as new' condition

Inner Sleeve - esimated to be in NEAR-EXCELLENT condition

The original plain white paper with printing at the base of one side. Some creasing, no tears, light brown age-toning around the edges, particularly at base

Disc - estimated to be in EXCELLENT condition

Anti-static pad applied before each spin though never cleaned

Played quite frequently though not for many years prior to testing for this sale

No warping

Side 1 has a light half-inch scratch (inaudible) near the beginning otherwise no scratches or scuffing. Residual traces of fingermarks here and there. Gloss remains bright, perhaps dulled slightly across the grooves

No pops, crackles, jumps or sundry unwanted noises and the music sounds as clean as it ever did to my ears

Labels - estimated to be in EXCELLENT+ condition

Very attractive bright lime-green matt labels essentially in mint condition with no spindle marks, scuffs or marks. Plastic shows through on one side of hole, which is a pressing fault

The slightly grubby cover perhaps downgrades this LP overall but the sparkling condition of the newspaper insert and disc itself means this is a fine example of this unique record.

Like most of my ageing LPs it may benefit from professional cleaning

RECORD COLLECTOR'S Grading System

MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
