JIM FASSETT
SYMPHONY OF THE BIRDS LP
Ficker Records
50's early electronic tape manipulations / musique concrete by american pioneer Jim Fassett. Nearly impossible to find such a great copy today.
Some info on the release: Excellent and rare 50's lp exploring the weird and wacky side of early electronic tape manipulations/musique concrete, presenting an array of sped-up, slowed-down, reversed, cut-up, and montaged found sounds. Alongside the work of his more serious academic contemporaries in the early electronic tape music scene like Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, and Karlheinz StockhausenWild stuff -- and one of the oddest records we've ever heard! The work is truly a Symphony Of Birds -- in that all the source material here was recorded in the field, out of the mouths of actual birds -- but the overall execution is far different than just a bunch of birdcalls, and thanks to careful studio manipulation, Jim Fassett makes the whole thing sound like a record of analogue electronics! From what we can tell, the album involves Fassett manipulating and re-assembling his bird call recordings in ways that form a whole new kind of music -- one that has some bird-like elements, but which sounds hauntingly electronic at most moments -- and which comes across in a beautiful array of chirps and cheeps. The package features some notes in Japanese, others in English, lots of photos -- and even a massive "disc guide", listing dozens of related albums of field recordings, bird calls, and even whistling! Titles include some initial "Explanatory Comments" by Fassett, plus different movements of the suite. The second half features more birdcall recordings, narrated by Fassett -- but presented in a more straightforward way. It is highly recommended as a fascinating period document, as a trove of sound effects, and as a beautiful specimen of outsider musique concrete.
Fassett was the director of CBS Radio, a radio show host, music critic, audiophile, and early magnetic tape experimentalist who in the 1950s released several novelty musique concrete recordings. Other references: Jean-Jacques Perrey, Bruce Haack, Raymond Scott, Tod Dockstader, Francois Bayle, Luc Ferrari...(kind courtesy of keymap)
Condition: Vinyl lies in very good++ condition visually, shows some superficial marks on side a: that do not affect playing, while side b: looks close to mint!! Playgraded it's close to excellent with only some occasional crackle. Cover lies in very good+ condition with some corner bending, while in general i'd say this is the ideal copy for this 50's album, believe me i have seen some copies in the past of this one and this one is the best you'll ever find!!
