Description
Here is SHORTY GODWIN, an imaginative and versatile Hillbilly guitarist / fiddler / entertainer, who as "Hiram Hayseed," kept audiences happy on WWVA, out in Wheeling, West Virginia. Before that, in Atlanta, in 1929, he made one single record for the Columbia Hillbilly Series: "JIMBO JAMBO LAND," and "TURNIP GREENS."
On "Turnip," Shorty sings of dying and meeting St. Peter at the Golden Gate, who asks him why he's ten years late. Shorty says it's because he eats those good old turnip greens! "Jimbo Jambo Land" is one of those "exotic" minor-major key Tin Pan Alley songs, like "Timbuctoo" or "My Bimbo From the South Sea Isles," which anthropologically explores the cultural and sexual advantages of landing on a remote South Pacific island. Evidently, Mr. Godwin let his imagination fly far beyond Atlanta.
Oh, and he plays some ACE ragtime, finger-picking guitar on both sides!
This original black-label "Hillbilly" series Columbia 15411-D is in clean E+ condition. It passes for "New." This is a honey of a record!

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing! My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value. I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care.
