Label/Format: Track – Intense matt black and silver format. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both ultra clean and attractive and look really incredible to the eye, these are very difficult to find looking like this. Just TWO spindle marks on each side that only show with angled viewing. There is no wear around the hole rims at all – simply incredible on a mono classic like this – without any doubt, this gem has hardly ever been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Moderately rare and getting harder to find all the time as early original Hendrix albums are in high demand with fewer available copies being found or offered. Most offered are played into the ground and only offer less-than-wonderful sound with playing surfaces awash with scratches and rife with invisible groovewear and labels a maze of spindle marks and gouges. This stunning example is light-years away from this at the other end of spectrum. The cover looks lovely with minimal wear or blemishing. The record gleams and has clearly been played very lightly. A very few light surface marks only with no sound and stunning clean labels. A copy that will thrill collectors of the great man and it really will prove very difficult to find much better. Just think, this album was in the shops and purchased when he was still alive, touring and at his very best.

Brief Info: In the most famous year in music which saw so many classics and great debuts issued, this amazing album stood out and even today still thrills. Classic blues-based psychedelia, Hendrix almost reinvented the electric guitar. Powerful backing from Michell and Redding this extraordinary record is testament to this man’s legend and memory. This is a very early mono copy, the stereo version came slightly later. This is a superb copy too, it has the front only laminate – the fully laminated version is highly elusive and very rare indeed. Of the three Experience covers, this one always wears the least well with the back fully exposed. The actual record too is very difficult to find that has not been subjected to heavy use and traumas associated with partying and thick heavy mono stylii (sometimes chipped or worn causing havoc and irrepairable damage to the delicate groove walls that results in distortion and sound break-up). I have seen seen examples of this title that almost defy description; suffice to say politely – they are unplayable. Even with many plays, it still never fails to amaze me how records can get into such a state but seeing is believing – I leave them well alone, if a record does not please me, why should it please any potential buyer? This very early Track mono record has clearly been played little and without any doubt only on very fine equipment. A few very light and faint surface marks only with NO sound and NO deep penetrating scratches that are rarely avoided from the ‘Dansette’ era. This plays beautifully and practically all quietly. This is important because this album was not recorded loudly, infact the recording is fairly quiet and to get the best out of this album, the volume has to be turned up. Thus, less-than-perfect examples will sound even more disappointing as any background surface noise or groovewear will be amplified too. This information is not always mentioned but I consider important. This rare debut has fine detail and is well produced, it’s just the lack of volume compared to many mono albums that is a little unusual. The hugely encouraging factor is it plays devoid of distortion as mentioned above, it remains well focused and the inbuild power of this record still shines through impressively, but turn it up. The cover is very attractive also but has a little light wear on the back – how many avoid it totally, let’s be honest. Overall a wonderful example and most collectors I feel will be delighted to own it.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: the back is very prone to wear especially.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+. A single format and laminated on the front. It was printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London and still has the ‘Patent Pending’ text next to this imprint.

Lamination & Front: The front looks magnificent and totally defies its 40+ years-of-age. Still very clear and shiny with barely any friction rubs or dulling and importantly, all fully adhered with no noteworthy lifting or blisters – always great news for maximum good looks. There is little creasing either, any faint traces present are ultra faint and barely even show. A few very mild press marks that remain invisible with normal viewing. Fresh, clean with minimal surface marks, the classic artwork can be enjoyed to maximum advantage here and this will prove difficult to find significantly better.

Cover Back: The back looks lovely also but does have a little mild wear. A rubbed ring arc on the right edge is visible and a fine mild scuff on the bottom right edge. Also a very small rub on the top edge towards the left. This apart, there is little else to fault and this is still very clean and fresh looking. Hardly any creasing or traces of grubbiness, I feel sure this has been handled little – that will more than obvious to any winning bidder. Given this is a highly wear-prone back, it has withstood the perils of age and storage very well overall and does truly still look attractive to the eye.

Top Edge: Little wear at all.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little real wear and no feathering. Record entered on this right outside edge.

Spine and Text: Quite a thin and fragile spine and few survive ‘perfect’. The laminate on this cover ends short both left and right and this spine had no protection. Most of the text is present and strong with just a mild rub to a couple of characters. Solid, straight and clean with no compression, overall strong and attractive.

Corners: Small rub top left, the others have little wear at all and all retain superb shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A beautiful example, yes a little wear on the back but few will have less and the lack of creasing and grubbiness is great news for good looks. Not quite the grade for the perfectionists but most collectors I feel sure will enjoy this one.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ / EX++, A super visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. A few light surface marks on side one, mostly on the first track but these have NO sound. Hardly any on side two and looking magnificent. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors but again not quite the perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful old record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As stated above, not the loudest cut ever made but simply use the volume control, it’s what its there for. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The run-in grooves are practically silent and the same goes for most all of the joining grooves - always great proof the record itself is quiet. Crackle can be masked to some degree with the music but glad to state, here it’s not necessary. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has generally been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Over 40+ years, the odd minor mark will occur, the odd cover storage blemish too, it’s natural and rarely will not happen. Simply compare this to the average available copy on offer – chalk and cheese – this is an exceptional mono record and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Still one of the greatest rock-psych albums of all-time, do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
