Label/Format: Track – intense matt black finish. Interesting the two different spellings of Gipsies that vary on label to cover. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive and very black indeed. Quite possibly the least spindle marks I have yet seen on a Track copy of this record. Side one has a couple and struggling to find any of note on side two at all. Although this one has the second issue cover – still far from common – it is a very early pressed record with very matrixes and stampers (seen below). All Hendrix fans will know, the original ‘Puppet Doll’ cover, was quickly withdrawn from sale and replaced by this matt gatefold cover. Most seen are Polydor pressings that again changed the cover to something totally different.

Cat Number: 2406 002.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good weight for this still very early issue.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: like most Hendrix albums on Track, these were all soon to be repressed on Polydor. Initial runs of this album has the Puppet cover, it was withdrawn and changed to this gatefold style with totally different artwork. Unusually, and possibly made in haste, this included no text on front, back or spine, so it was far from obvious what it even was without looking inside. The early-pressed intense black Track records were simply transferred to this new cover and are not that easy to find, especially with the record hardly even played.

Brief Info: Issued when Hendrix was still alive after he disbanded the ‘Experience’, this was the last album under his control and was a live set recorded at the Fillmore East, New York in 1970. The songs were all new. A great performance even if the sound is a little muted and a legendary album. Initial copies had the Pupper cover, it was withdrawn very quickly and replaced with totally different artwork as per here. One thing both covers did share however was their vulnerability to wear. Both are seldom seen without rubbing, ringwear and general ageing. This dark cover probably even more prone and this one is not perfect. However the record is in superb shape and indeed this one came from the superb collection of hardly played records I have been offering for the past two weeks (and plenty more to follow). So this still very early pressed Track copy could indeed be a significant upgrade for many and the cover is not half bad either.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): an unlaminated gatefold cover with a light surface sheen. Printed and made in England by MacNeill. All sides are smooth finished, the inside is more a flat matt.

Cover Front: A difficult cover, most of them are seen rubbed and badly worn. This has little rubbing but does have some, moderately light creasing near the bottom right corner area. A few light press marks on the centre area of Hendrix’s hair, these show more under light with little visibility with normal viewing. Few other creases and the lack or rubbing or surface wear the being good news.

Cover Back: A small bottom left corner crease with few others again. Some light surface rubbing but the lack of ringwear from which this cover so often suffers a major plus point. The spine fold on front and back is light affected, this another trait of this cover, and the spine has a change in colour hue.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The same creases are seen inside as mentioned above, those apart, little else to fault on matt black surfaces that reveal handling and wear all to often. Any fingermarks here are very faint and few indeed.

Top Edges: Light to near moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Light patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with little wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge that only has mild thickening or minor burr traces when viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: Very light patchy rubbing mainly on the very ends and the top fold – most-all ink intact and present, this has far better than many I have seen. Always vulnerable, this is in very respectable condition. Solid, straight with minimal compression, the colour hue changed by natural light, clearly this one is prone to this. No text was printed on this spine.

Corners: Light to near moderate tip rubbing, again less than average. Fine to very fine shape is retained with one or two fairly modest tip creases.

Cover Summary: Still an attractive, and not that common second printing of this album cover, this replaced the Puppet original that was withdrawn from sale. Not for the perfectionist as the grading informs, but many collectors will enjoy it – and the early pressed record is very nice indeed.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(-): this is the original Polydor-style lined inner that is date coded 1070 (October 1970) which proves how early this ‘second issue’ is – second issue for the cover, but the record is nigh-on identical as the matrixes and stampers prove. This inner has shed it’s lining but I have replaced it with a quality ultra soft, anti-static replacement. It has aged with some modereate darkening wub has few creases and the window circles are mainly very crisp and neat. All edges are unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with just ultra light and faint surface trace marks visible only under light. These have no sound whatsoever and this record plays very impressively. A super, very early pressed visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and these playing surfaces will be difficult to find better on what I still consider a ‘first pressing’. These records were simply put into a different cover with no differences. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce Track record plays up to and most all above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is as good as it gets, but not the most outstanding in terms of dynamic range but a more typical live album production for this period. Any surface sound is very light and brief, mere traces on the odd very quiet passages of which there are few. Overall, a very clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Few copies will outperform this quality Track pressing significantly I feel sure – so many seen are Polydor, real reissues – Hendrix on Track are the originals as far as I am concerned, and are far more prized and special. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled and stored within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
