Description

ONEADAYRECORDS – Delivering Quality Music to the World.

Artist or Band: THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

Album Title: Are You Experienced.

Producer(s): Chas Chandler.

TRACK LIST:

Side 1: Foxy Lady; Manic Depression; Red House; Can You See Me; Love or Confusion; I Don’t Live Today.

Side 2: May This Be Love; Fire; 3rd Stone From the Sun; Remember; Are You Experienced.

Label/Format: Track – Intense matt black format with mono logo. With close viewing, these appear very slightly textured with a grainy surface under angled light but feel quite smooth to the fingertip.

Label Conditions: Both look stunning: as clean and fresh as when manufactured all those years ago, when the great man was still alive. Side one has light spindle marks, with two or three being longer, all are fine and only show under angled light, there is no ink removal, scuffing or chipping. Side two has barely a spindle mark to be seen at all and this label looks almost as made. Both are incredibly black and I mean intense black, not a grey-black. They have no fingermarks and such labels are ruthlessly revealing of handling, once fingermarks are applied, they are near impossible to remove, these have none. Truly beautiful labels that time and the owner has largely overlooked, I hope my pictures do them justice.

Cat Number: 612001.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Fast becoming rare and getting harder to find all the time, available examples in high grading conditions are incredibly hard to find as early original Hendrix albums are in high demand. This is a superb copy with any blemishes very minor indeed and the cover the same. A fantastic mono original that will prove immensely difficult to find like this again, this being little short of connoisseur standard.

Original Year of Release: 1967

Matrix Nos: 612001 A 1 1 1 3 / 612001 B 1 1 1 (Side two has an ‘A’ corrected to ‘B’)

Musicians: Jimi Hendrix - guitar, vocal; Mitch Mitchell - drums; Noel Redding - bass guitar, vocal.

Brief Info: In the most famous year in music which saw so many classics and great debuts issued, this amazing album stood out and even today still thrills. Classic blues-based psychedelia, Hendrix almost reinvented the electric guitar. Powerful backing from Michell and Redding, this extraordinary record is testament to this man’s legend and memory. This is a very early mono copy, the stereo version came along slightly later. This is a fantastic all round example too. Of the three Experience covers, this one always wears the least well with the back being unprotected – only a small few exist with laminated backs – I have personally never seen one. The record is very difficult to find that has not been subjected to heavy use and traumas associated with heavy used with thick heavy-tracking stylus, often chipped, worn or badly aligned causing havoc and irrepairable damage to the delicate groove walls that results in distortion and sound break-up. I have seen seen examples of this title that almost defy description suffice to say politely – they are unplayable. Even with heavy use it still never fails to amaze me how records can get into such a state but seeing is believing – I leave them well alone, if a record does not please me, why should it please any potential buyer? This extraordinary copy had been played very lightly indeed and has two very clean playing surfaces that will almost remind those of a certain age what a new copy once looked like. It is not quite blemish-free, but how many available copies every will be?, let’s be honest. In terms of beauty, it will take something almost remarkable to beat it significantly for looks and sound. Full details on visual and play-grade further down. A debut album is incredible skill, maturity and imagination from rock’s most creative period, this album has it all. Capture the full glory of this legendary guitar hero in sublime mono sound as close to perfect as it gets. This was the ultimate experience.

Cover Grade and Format: Very critically graded EX++ and very arguably better still. It’s a single format and laminated on the front. It was printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London and still has the ‘Patent Pending’ text next to this imprint. A highly wear-prone cover and seldom seen much better than VG, this is a beauty with any blemishes minor.

Lamination & Front: Very attractive indeed with the laminate fresh, clear, shiny and importantly, fully adhered with no lifting or blisters whatsoever, even the spine edge, the most critical area for non-adhesion is perfect. Under angled light there is very faint traces of friction rubs but I am again being very critical, few will show less than this and most all will have considerably more. An ultra faint trace of the record’s rim edge profile which is near impossible to avoid on a cover over 42-years-old, but again look very hard to see. Creasing is a major factor on any dark and thin card cover: this has very little which is great news again. There is just one half moon just above Redding’s red shirted (his) left shoulder. Any others are very fine hairline types which most all lie on the edges, but unusually few on the spine. The avoidance of even one deep heavy crease is quite unusual on this cover which does seem prone. The right edge has a fine exposed strip where the laminate just ends short of full width, this line is undamaged or grubby with no chipping. The manufacture trim is not spot on with the back edge sligthly wider than the front, more so at the bottom and tapering off to the top – a mere and minor manufacture blemish. The band picture artwork is stunningly fresh and vividly coloured and looking in jaw-drop good condition. Even under light, there are very few surface marks, even hairlines are super-fine and few and the laminate has a lovely smooth, glass-like feel to the fingertips. Clearly modestly handled and carefully stored for all its considerable years. With so few blemishes or traces of wear or ageing, this sets a very high standard and will not be beaten easily.

Cover Back: The back is also exceptional, more so given it’s unprotected and highly vulnerable to all forms of wear. Blemishes or wear?, well very few or little at all. A tiny rub on the bottom edge near the centre, but look very hard to see it, and quite honestly, that’s about it. This is very clean, fresh with any handling traces few and faint. Barely any traces or rubbing, marks and no creasing or ringwear. Somehow this back has even avoided any record impression and all the ink and artwork is almost pristine. You just have to put a cover like this into context, clearly this has been cover protected for most of its existence and hardly ever exposed to light or use. Only a tiny percentage of these early mono covers will survive like this. The majority scruffy and tired looking, damaged, worn, often torn and with sticker marks and names written on them. We have all seen these major classics like this in that state and it simply brings home the beauty of the ones that have survived the ravages of time and rough handling. Take another look at my pictures, they do not lie, this is a gorgeous cover.

Top Edge: Practically as made and dead straight too.

Bottom Edge: Almost as above, the very centre has a faint burr trace. This being a thin edged cover and this the ‘resting’ edge, few will ever show less wear than this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no real wear and no feathering. As stated above, this is not cut dead square in manfacture with the bottom of the front being slightly short of the back. This is guaranteed untrimmed the proof being the laminate end on the front being dead parallel from top to bottom. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: A thin and fragile spine but is still remarkably straight. The laminate on this cover ends short both left and right and this spine had no protection which makes the lack of wear totally remarkable. ALL text is fully present and unworn which is highly unusual. The text is actually deeper than the spine area, hence it’s centred low, this is how it was manufactured, it has not compressed which will be immediately apparent to any winning bidder. I would assume this can vary from cover to cover, but this is an immensely fragile, exposed spine and few survive looking like this. (Please see my spine text close-up).

Corners: The corners are little short of as-made again. Any tip rubs are tiny and faint and all retain their original shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A real beauty, worthy of being framed. Not quite pristine but up there with the best that are likely to be offered. One of the cover classics, this does is near full justice and I feel sure it will please most collectors.

The Inner: The plain white lined inner is included in fine condition. It has the 612-001 number written in pen on the bottom right corner area. Clean with minimal ageing and all the edges unsplit. One small neat tear around the hole has been repaired by myself, it was the only minor ‘damage’ of note. Very light corner semi-creases only and the window neat with the lining clear and solid. Again, a fine inner given the considerable vintage.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Again ultra critically graded EX++. Side one has a fine hairline with no sound, a mere surface mark and a fine one at that. Any other marks on this side are ultra fine and faint, merely surface trace blemishes that are rarely not seen on any record as the very minimum. Side two would grade Mint(-) bar one tiny fine mark on ‘3rd Stone’, this has three light clicks, the only ones on the album – in terms of a mono record in its forty-third year, it’s a tiny blemish to say the very least. Both sides look fantastic and it will immediately apparent to any winning bidder this record has hardly been played. It retains a fantastic shine and freshness with an intense black finish and very solidly pressed on tough, quality Track vinyl. One that has escaped the perils of mono pickups and damaging Dansettes with tracking weights in ounces rather than the odd gram or two. It makes me shudder to think what this could have potentially been subjected too, but no. This beautifully preserved mono record looks fantastic and again, few will have fewer marks or plays on the clock than this.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: It almost seems unfair to expect a mono record of this vintage to perform well on a high-end stereo turntable fitted with a moving coil cartridge, clinical amp and speakers, but this record was a delight from start to finish and played with very little unwanted. Firstly, the sound levels on this record are not high so volume is needed to bring out the best. It plays totally free of any distortion, the grooves totally unworn and the mono mix and detail is immensely impressive on what is a complex production with many effects. The sheer class and genius of the man flows from the speakers. I have already mentioned the three light clicks on ‘3rd Stone’, the only minor blemish of note on the whole record that sounds fantastic. If this is pretty much all I can fault, it must be saying something for this lovely record. Being even more critical, there is a trace of faint sporadic surface sound on the opening track of each side, but very brief indeed - the LP12 is ruthlessly revealing and being honest, it would probably go unnoticed on other, less clinical equipment. Very minor anyway, but I like to mention all I hear however small it may seem. There is no ‘mono’ single channel noise, a trait of poor alignment or wear from previous playings on old equipment, without any doubt, this has hardly been played anyway. All frequencies are sharp, clear and fully focused with no clipping to the high frequencies. Just compare to what most will sound like these days, this record was never designed to be played on stereo equipment anyway. But when found in such lovely, clean conditions, these mono masterpieces are truly wonderful, the sound unique to the analogue format and sounding very different to the more familiar stereo version that was available on record for many years. This classic record should please most collectors, the odd minor faint sound blemish is almost unavoidable, but this has so very few anyway. At least I do mention them and leave nothing to chance. This is little short of audiophile standard within the confines of the technology of the day, but if absolute dead silence is non-negotiable, well better to wait for the near impossible. No CD version will ever compare to the vinyl original and any minuscule sound blemishes are worth the difference in the performance this record will delivery – and will continue to do so for another 40+ years if treated and handled with the due respect it deserves. A wonderful example of the highest class, it will truly take an incredible one to better it. Worthy of my highest recommendation, the legend of Hendrix started here and will rarely be heard better.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee total accuracy for colours however but most will be very close. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. I hope the item below is to your liking - any questions can be emailed and I will do my very best to answer you. I am enthusiastic, and have a fair degree of knowledge about many genres and I promise quality items - bid with confidence - excellence comes as standard and so does Near Mint regularly. Please assume all records I offer have NO jumps, sticks, warps or writing on covers or labels unless clearly stated to the contrary. Thanks for your interest and Good luck – MIKE.

Equipment Used for Play-Grading: I now play-grade ALL the records I offer (unless clearly stated to the contrary) on the following equipment:

Deck: Linn LP12 with Ittok Mk IV arm and Ortofon Samba Moving Coil cartridge (tracks at 1.8 grams). Amps: Naim Nait 5i with Project USB phono stage and Chord interconnects. Speakers: B&W 704 Floorstanding 3-way Monitors (bi-wired). All records I offer on Ebay are cleaned on a professional Moth vacuum machine before play-grading for the cleanest and best possible sound and will include a brand new lined inner and protective cover too.

First-time, zero-rated bidders, who do not ask permission to bid, will be cancelled immediately and blocked – NO exceptions. For winning bidders who I consider excessively slow to make contact or submit payment, I will use my right to block future bids. If any bidder who wins in the final seconds is present to do so, surely they can at least email me to inform of intention and payment method? If swift or promp payment is a problem, please do not bid.

POSTING & PACKING: What You Get: To confirm to the strict Ebay rules on shipping, I must now send ALL my packets ‘Signed-For’ with NO exceptions. Both buyers and sellers want their packets to have a safer journey and this is not a bad thing.

I now offer the fastest possible posting, mostly the very next day after payment is received or within three days maximum (unless on holiday). All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT mailers) with the record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with TWO VERY THICK stiffners for even extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed. The cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW heavy duty soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. Printed address labels are used for clarity as well as a sender label. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but ‘Signed-For’ posting is NOT an option anymore. I do not profit on posting and offer probably the best-value and safest shipping possible. I will invoice any winning bidder as soon as possible after the auction ends. My ‘loss’ or ‘damage rate’ is less than 0.1 per percent based on over 5,000+ items sold in over 8 years of Ebay trading and I consider that pretty exceptional. I discount of course for multiple purchases with a maximum of FOUR records per packet. I will not respond to questions on shipping costs as all the details are included in the advert.

NOTE: First Time Bidders: I will cancel ALL first-time bidders with no feedbacks or excessive negatives who do not ask me if its OK to bid first – NO EXCEPTIONS.

Please Note: I will now offer any item to the runner-up after the mandatory Ebay 3 days if no contact is made by the winning bidder unless prior notice of any delay is given beforehand. The same applies if no payment is received within the mandatory 7 days so any bidder who has just lost out can still email me to reserve the item as priority second chance – it’s always worth asking.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
