Label/Format: Track – Very intense matt black surfaces with quite deeply textured, rough surfaces, it shows the original mono logo. If there appears any slight 'shadow' on my label pictures, there are NONE, it is because of longer exposure to try to get best detail of the fine textured surfaces when being hand-held (Please see my label pictures).

Label Conditions & Overview: Both look very impressive: very clean, fresh and incredibly dark labels, the intense black ink really makes the silver text and detail really stand out. Under light very fine spindle marks can be seen, these have not scuffed or removed any ink at all from these attractive labels that really do defy their considerable age. This pair also the very early textured finish rather than the later smooth finish types. They are incredibly revealing, but here little to see as the spindle seeking marks are so incredibly fine, and in context for a popular mono record, not too many either. Mono record labels I have found were more often used to seek the spindle than stereo. Hence, even though around moderate in number, I am sure this legendary record has been played only lightly, this reitterated by very clean playing surfaces, and more importantly very clean sound with NO distortion or groove wear. In fact the only blemish of note were four or five clicks (of which only two were moderate) on (as so often) on the first track ‘EXP’, more towards it’s end. Put into context, this is an exceptional record that has come very close to surviving the mono era and format almost unscathed, and so few ever will. How many totally trashed horrendous sounding copies of this record, along with many other similar titles have you seen? Well this truly does buck-the-trend, and was a joy to play-grade. All the stunning detail intact with very little unwanted – this too being played on one of the world’s most revealing turntables in the Linn LP12, for which such records were not really designed. But when found this clean – and how many classic early mono cuts will not have the odd few light clicks as the barest minimum? – they are a genuine treasure. A very early cut that can be enjoyed to the near maximum and will last many years with due care and respect it deserves.

Rarity: Rare in fine condition, the more vulnerable monos are very hard to find this clean with many that surface being in horrendous conditions visually, and sound even worse. This one includes the original lyric sheet, often referred to as a ‘poster’. It came with a few early pressed copies only and it remains elusive and difficult to find in really fine condition too. Often mounted with pin holes or cellotape marks (or torn). This is unmounted and does come quite close to reminding of new. Complete examples of this mono album are very rare and highly sort-after – it even featured recently on the BBC ‘Antiques Roadshow’ with their expert putting a vast price on a very clean copy – also tipping it as a considerable future investment. But I think most Hendrix fans already know this already.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer a very early mono copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics - they are getting very hard to find at all now, clean copies that play well are even more elusive. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow up to the classic Are You Experienced, slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions, none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. How many times do you see this record offered, just to find its been played to destruction? Massive solid masses of spindle marks around a whitened, scuffed, enlarged hole, the record covered in a multitude of scratches, scuffs and a dulled grey looking piece of vinyl covered in a maze of finger marks or caked in dust or grime? Well this super copy is on the other side of the vinyl fence and looks and plays impressively. As stated further up, four or five clicks on ‘EXP’ but little else. An album as important as most in that great year of 1967 - the summer of love - just think this record was actually purchased while the great man was still alive - This makes a record like this indispensable. This vintage mono copy includes the scarce insert – these are really difficult to find clean, intact without major creasing – and this one is excellent. The cover looks attractive but does have a couple of very neat edge split repairs and and little corner rubbing. Although the front and back are protected, this is one that does not wear as well as you may think. Many are seen badly chipped with flaking laminate and other major issues. The sound and mix on this early copy is amazing, and of course it sounds very different to the stereo version. It appears only modestly played and retains crisp sound and no distortion or clipping of the intricate detail only the early analogue format really offers. This is way above average and should please many (if not most) collectors. The sound on record will never be beaten, this is the real thing, no remixing, remastering or tampering, it was produced by Chas Chandler and this is how he wanted it to sound. This sound and mix on this vintage Track copy is definitive, sit back and enjoy it and listen in awe of the master genius that was Jimi Hendrix – I am sure the great man himself would have approved.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: but actually looks considerably better. This is mainly marked down a little for two very neat edge split repairs and moderate rubbing to the spine ends (as seen on my pictures). A gatefold format with front and back laminate. The inside gatefold has four external flipbacks at the top and bottom. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd and includes the rare lyric insert ‘poster’ and the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ original white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: A gorgeous work-of-art in itself and both sides here look impressive. The laminate retains a fine shine, fine freshness and clarity with no lifting or blistering. Viewed more critically under angled light, a little quite modest dulling is seen along with some fine surface marks, but nothing serious and normal full-on viewing reveals little unwanted. There is rubbing on the spine ends and to a lesser extent on the other other tips too, but the lack of heavy creasing is always a bonus on this one – most of any present are quite fine and light and again have very modest to low visibility viewed normally. The corner tips apart, there are barely any chips on view, and this cover is very prone to them, so there is very little to detract or spoil the magnificent bright and hardly blemished artwork as can be seen on my fully opened picture. Even rim impression is light, this too with quite a thick and solid record inside for 45-years. All considered, both front and back are impressive and should please many collectors.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both internal faces are again impressive with little to fault. A little gentle crinkle being slightly critical, but the lack of general wear makes this again way above average. Just look at the intense ink colour of the great man seen in close-up. The main panels are both unlaminated with matt, smooth surfaces. These so often get plastered in finger marks that when applied, are near impossible to remove. So glad to state, this has practically avoided any and all three Experience members portraits look fantastic. Arguably, the most crucial areas are those four flipbacks, here all are in superb condition with no damage and retaining crisp, unburred ends. Often these can stick together as the laminate contracts exposing sticky ends, here this has been avoided again – and there are NO tip-ins or enhancements. They even retain a rich surface shine, a few fine surface creases, but little else. A centrefold to match, or even better the spectacular colour of the outside.

Top Edges: The back I feel sure had a fine and neat split which has been carefully and very neatly repaired – NOT by myself, but now only appears as a fine surface rub. So hardly anything major and only seen viewed end-on, it is around 1.5 inches. All else up to the rubbed spine end is close to as made with no real issues.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same again with just a small and very fine repaired split on the front edge in the centre, again it shows little, only with full-on viewing. But who wants to view edges with so much other wonderful artwork to enjoy?

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear. A little thickening or burr traces on the back entrance, this being quite critical as viewed end-on, the front edge is sealed and very neat. Both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: The main issue with this spine is the ends that have fairly substantial rubs. In most cases, the laminate will form a natural central crease and the ends chip and that is simply what has happened here. So both ends are white with exposed card that has rubbed. But that is largely the negative part – the rest of the spine shows little wear with just one quite small chip and most of the surface present and intact. As stated, there is a natural central ‘crack’ line in the laminate which in most cases will form as the inside hinge is raised making the outside spine pull against the laminate. The laminate is still intact apart from the ends of course, and has not flaked, but care and gentle handling must be observed in this area for any future owner. But this will apply to mos to these, this being no real exception, just pure common-sense. Overall, straight, mainly solid with little compression, also folded squarely so the edges meet flush and parallel. That always good news for neatness.

Corners: Small tip rubs on the right tips, few will have much less here. The spine ends have moderate and moderate+ chipping and some rubbing. Again this more visible when looked directly upon and far less so when viewing the main front and back surfaces direct. Very mild erosion on the spine ends but the other corners retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A lovely piece of artwork from the psychedelic period, and with the main faces being impressive and attractive it will please many collectors. With only a few mainly gentle hints of it’s considerable vintage, this deceptively delicate cover will not be easy to find much better with an early-cut mono record inside. With the main issues on the edges (both still very neat) and corners, it will not be for the highly discerning or perfectionists. But with these now becoming increasingly harder and harder to find even very good, this will take some beating.

The Inner Sleeve: The original unlined plain white inner is included in near excellent visual condition. It has very little creasing and only gentle discolouration around the edges. A small tear on one flipback end and the edges had neat movement splits, but I DID repair those myself to stop them widening in future, they hardly even show now. As stated further up, this has the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

The Poster Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): and guaranteed ORIGINAL. I have seen one or two fakes over time and they look pathetic in comparison to the real thing. This has a single manufactured fold which is solid and unstressed with no splits or weakening. The orange colour is intense and has the correct matt finish – it is also UNMOUNTED. NO pinholes, tape or adhesive marks on the back at all, just a tiny few small and light tone spots near the fold and odd set off trace of the magenta colour in manufacture. But barely anything to fault on the magnificent front that looks stunning. No hard creases at all with just very light thumb crinkle that has minimal visibility, this appears very modestly handled and devoid again of fingermarks. The edges are crisp and sharp and guaranteed UNTRIMMED. Printed on thin paper and clearly fragile, this 45-year-old insert will never be easy to find much better than this. Elusive and so often missing, this really is the icing on the cake, and this alone could prove a significant upgrade for many.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with mostly only very fine and faint surface marks seen under bright angled light –I think this is being very conservatively graded being honest. A tiny mark that is not even that easy to locate on ‘EXP’ that, as stated a couple of times already, has four or five clicks near it’s end, but little else at all really. A gentle surface scuff trace on ‘You’ve Got Me Floating’ that opens side two has NO sound at all. Few available mono records of this popularity and age will surface a great deal better and both playing surfaces look clean, shiny, intense black and a very solidly pressed also. Retaining genuine freshness and a fine lustre, this has survived that perilous era well and I am this has been played quite modestly. It not only looks impressive, is sounds it too. Not for the perfectionist again – and now many of these ever truly will be? let’s be honest. Visually a super record that should please many collectors, and all considered, possibly most.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This highly-prized, legendary classic psych album plays even above its high visual grading with very little to fault. I have mentioned the main blemish, being merely five clicks – three of which are light and two moderate, but thereafter, little else of any major note. This album tracks effortlessly and was a real pleasure to play-grade. Strong, distortion-free sound throughout – never take this for granted on any mono record, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no other pops or other significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Unruined by blunt stylus or heavy usage, this truly gave an impressive performance on sensitive equipment for which these mono records were not really designed for. But when this clean, they are national treasures and a joyous experience. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and I feel generally with care. The mark is tiny on ‘EXP’ as is the only small blemish of note on the whole album. The detail and dynamics of the mono sound is still for the connoisseur listener and many still think it is the only true way to enjoy this album. We all know what the majority of mono records of this era can and do look like these days. Grimy, deep scratches and terrible worn grooves that are unlistenable – we have all experienced them. I will NOT offer such rubbish, this is a lovely record and it’s minor light visual blemishes are mostly ignored. The tiny few brief clicks apart, nothing else at all spoilt my genuine pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, especially in mono and including the prized insert. I know perfectionists want nothing unwanted, but in the real world, will any original copy of this album ever play as quiet as a CD? This realistically could be a close as they get with only gentle and very few reminders of what you are actually listening too – a 45-year-old mono original, not a squeaky clean digital version – I rest my case.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
