Label/Format: Track – Intense black with silver ink, smooth finish, but do look slightly textured to the eye.

Label Conditions: Both labels are very clean, fresh and highly attractive. Any of the very few spindle marks present are tiny, fine and faint and hardly even show – black being highly revealing too – finding a copy of this with fewer will prove very difficult indeed. There is no chipping to the labels surface at all, the small marks on side one are silver ink marks, clearly there from manufacture, NOT chips or rubs, and it appears they are present on others too.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 151 grams. Not quite as heavy as the previous one of these I offered earlier in the year, but still an impressive and above average weight nonetheless.

Rarity & Overview: Rare: and these days getting very rare indeed especially with the insert (and this insert is in very fine condition with the text focused, precise, sharp and easily readable – not all are). The stereo version, which I personally prefer (and not just saying that because I have one to offer) is rarer than the mono. The ‘Summer of Love’ was still very much the era for the mono record and outsold the stereo version by a high degree. Very early pressings are often trashed beyond use, but this one, going on the available evidence, suggests very few plays. I am not saying this copy is perfect but it does set a high bar with just half a dozen clicks (mostly masked) on ‘EXP’ and any surface sound gentle, light and infrequent. But, and a huge BUT, this record plays with no distortion or groovewear – this too being played on a highly critical turntable and system. My play-grade was very enjoyable with only just about enough to remind you are actually listening to a 44-year-old record, issues when the man himself was still with us. The elusive and often missing insert lyric sheet, often referred to as a ‘poster’ is also in impressive condition, again, not perfect with a little creasing, but clean, still fresh and with intense colour, no tears, sharp edges and with very clear text. Printing quality on this insert also varies considerably. The deep red text matter is often printed paler and fuzzy and becomes very difficult to read. This one is ultra clear and sharp and is practically as good as they ever get in that respect. Or course, this insert is guaranteed original, NOT a repro, it has a dated ‘9 DEC 1967’ stamp on one corner (see in close-up), something I have not seen before. Lastly, the cover, seldom seen devoid of major laminate issues, creasing, peeling or chipping. This one has survived the years very well indeed with little to fault and really does look hugely impressive. A cover made the same for mono and stereo. Even the original inner is included, unsurprisingly I guess, a little aged but appearing just right for an album like this. So, a totally complete very early example with a heavyweight, modestly played record, it should please many collectors needing a copy.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer a rarer very early stereo copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics - they are getting very hard to find at all now here in the UK, nice copies that play well are even more elusive. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow-up to the classic Are You Experienced, slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. How many times do you see this record offered, just to find its been played to destruction? Excessive masses of spindle marks that sometimes almost cover the labels and white frays around the centre hole that has even enlarged and become lose fitting around the spindle, the record covered in a multitude of scratches, scuffs and a dulled grey looking piece of vinyl covered in a maze of finger marks or foreign debris? This one on the other side of the spectrum, it appears played very modestly, and if the label evidence is anything to go by, hardly at all. The opener ‘EXP’ will rarely play devoid of crackle and noise, this has little but 5 or 6 clicks were noted, but these somewhat masked by the sound, but which this time as increased in volume from the very quiet, spoken beginning. A little gentle surface sound was noted on side two in places, but only an extraordindary, barely played example will better this significantly – as stated above – just enough to remind of what you are actually listening too. An album as important as most in that great year of 1967 - the ‘Summer of Love’ - just think this record was actually purchased while the great man was still alive - This makes a record like this indispensable. The stereo mix is fantastic, especially on the aforementioned opener with highly effective channel-to-channel separation and interplay. I prefer psych albums in stereo as it adds to the ‘head effect’. The inclusion of the original poster/lyric insert which only came with the very early copies is a massive bonus too, especially seen intact, clean with only a little creasing. The sound via vinyl for this vintage recording will never be beaten, this is the real thing, no remixing, remastering no tampering, it was produced by Chas Chandler and this is how he wanted it to sound - why fool around with perfection? Even with a little very gentle and infrequent surface sound or ultra brief and few clicks, nothing will surpass the experience on the analogue format. This sound and mix on this vintage Track copy is definitive, sit back and enjoy it and listen in awe of the master genius that was Jimi Hendrix.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): (and possibly by best one ever?). A gatefold format with a laminated front and back, the inside panels are matt and smooth. This ends inside the spread on four external flipbacks situated on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London. No was text printed on this spine and this is a dual purpose mono and stereo cover.

Lamination – Front & Back: This is a cover that often suffers laminate issues, especially peeling and chipping of the edges. The only chipping here is on the spine ends and few will ever avoid this totally – here moderate as can be seen on my spine close-up pictures, but these areas represent the most wear on the entire cover which should speak volume for itself. The laminate retains a lovely shine, clarity and freshness so the quite stunning graphic can be enjoyed to the near maximum. The colour hue and intensity is superbly bright, vivid and age-defying. There are few marks at all and all is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and any creasing minimal and most-all of any present, confined to the edges as fine surface types. Even under light, hardly any evidence of any friction rubs or dulling which most of any surface marks ultra fine and whispy that few will ever avoid the bare minimum. With a record of this considerable weight inside for all these years, the lack of any significant pressing or major dulling is great news. Again, with normall viewing, it hardly even shows and how many will avoid this either? Lastly, the lack of chipping on the edges and spine folds makes all the sides incredibly neat and attractive and makes considerable difference to the entire sleeve. Overall, both sides are very impressive and importantly look fantastic to the eye, it will take an amazing example to better this significantly.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is very impressive indeed with barely any real wear at all. Being matt finished, a few light handling traces from the fingers is near impossible to avoid on a cover this substantial age. Crucially, those four flipbacks on the top and bottom edges are near immaculate with no wear, damage or even edge burring. No area has stuck and pulled and that in-itself is rare but most welcome news – and I have checked closely for tip-ins, of which there are none apparent. A small few hairline surface laminate creases on these which I consider normal and even these flipback surfaces retain super-shine. The man’s picture has an eerie presence and adds a real sense of iconic pleasure to this classic cover – without doubt, one of the most colourful classics in rock history.

Top Edges: Both in stunning condition with no peeling or chipping at all – hence, all the graphic is still fully intact. Just small tip rubs that I feel will prove near impossible to find without. My finger test proved no scuffs or cracks to be present, both are as smooth as when made.

Bottom Edges: As above, with just one tiny laminate chip trace on the front centre – this being critical and it hardly even shows – a possible minute tip-in possible.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is closed and has barely any hints of outside chipping or wear and remains crisp and neat. The back opening edge has hardly wear at all and remains sharp and crisp, again with no outside chipping – neither are worn inside either. Any burr or thickening traces are minuscule. Both are guaranteed untrimmed with no feathering or enhancements whatsoever.

Spine and Text: The spine is a crucial and critical area of this cover and very rarely does it escape laminate peeling, chipping and damage. This one is still very solid, straight with no compression. Folded square so the edges are parallel with barely any wear up to the corners that have rubbed as can be seen on my spine pictures. Both folds have avoided chipping which is a real achievement and what a difference this makes. The laminate, almost incredibly, has no peeling and any cracking is negligible and tiny. Just opening this vintage cover will form a central crease, then it will crack, peel and wear – any central crease is very fine and all the laminate is intact and certainly with no wear to the graphic that flows around.

Corners: The right sets have only small to tiny tip rubs and retain very fine shape. The spine pair have rubbed more, this present on the spine rather than the top and bottom, hardly excessive in context of this cover that always seems to have (often major) corner and edge issues. This pair too retain fine shape, especially when viewed from the standard back and front areas.

Cover Summary: A colourful, spectacular cover and rarely seen with so little wear and signs of ageing. This vintage sleeve is way above average - I may have seen the odd one better, but believe me I have several way below. An example that does it very high justice and one to hold and enjoy, not put in a rack awaiting a better one – most collectors will be more than happy to keep this one. This should please many, if not most collectors.

The Insert Poster: EXCELLENT: firstly, this is the genuine article, photocopies will be around offered as the real thing - Beware!, but this item will never be easy to fake and get away with. Deep magenta text on a very deep orange background, but printing quality really does vary. This one has text very clear, sharp and focused making the lyrics quite easy to read. It is a notoriously fragile item that fades, tears and creases badly if not looked after properly. This example HAS NOT been mounted, meaning there are no pin-holes or tape marks, it’s quite unusual to see the corners looking this neat and undamaged. Creasing is the main issue here: a moderate one on the top left corner area, this has not removed any of the orange ink, so it keeps visibility down. The top opposite has a much smaller one and a trace of crinkle, but that’s about it for creasing. The back is still clean with no toning spots or browning. The single manufactured fold is crisp and solid and the edges sharp with no tears or thickening. The front retains amazing deep rich colour and shows few marks at all. An unusual dated stamp is seen near the top right corner as my close-up picture shows. Inverted from the correct reading way up and stating ‘9 dec 1967’, I have no idea about this – factory or owner applied? – any opinion is a pure guess, so I will not bother. Even with the couple of creases, I have seen few better and my grading possibly over-harsh.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): a plain white, polylined inner with two very neat and crisp window circles and clear, if crinkled lining. This has some creases and has aged with some discolouration and one righ edge split. This one is British patented.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Audio Quality: EXCELLENT: again, being critical. A heavily pressed example with only very fine and faint surface marks seen under bright angled light? I am sure this has been played little, I have never seen a stereo copy with fewer spindle marks – although this is not defintive, it is always a good sign. Also, this is one of the few I have seen without a significant scratch on ‘EXP’, being such a quiet track at the beginning, the grooves are fine and any minor mishap in stylus placement meant an almost certain scratch. The stereo imagery on this psych Sci-Fi opener is simply stunning, and of course, missing on the mono version. Swathes of sound pulsate from speaker-to-speaker leading into the gentle second track ‘Up From the Skies’. ‘EXP’ plays superbly those ultra brief clicks apart without the usual crackle that often ruins this uncompromising track. Both playing surfaces look strong with a very fine shine and deep blackness. Sound quality is impressive with NO distortion and any surface sounds gentle and faint – a highly enjoyable experience overall. However those who want pristine mastertape quality throughout, will have to wait for the near impossible. Without doubt, this has never been abused on any worn-out, blunt or heavy tracking equipment – there was a choice in the UK in 1967 – most bought the mono for the purpose of playing on the appropriate record player. Musically, this is vintage classic Hendrix, skillfully blending rock and psychedelia. This record offers wonderful entertainment with little unwanted at all. With with a lovely cover and solid insert too, this an elusive complete copy. Hearing this classic devoid of groovewear or distortion and loud repetitive clicks is a joy and I feel most fans and collectors will cherish this second groundbreaking album, this merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
