THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE – Electric Ladyland ORIG Track Records LP / 613 008/009 (UK, Stereo, 1968)

Happy to present this later UK Track press of Hendrix’s sprawling masterpiece.  When I say ‘later’ it’s not a whole lot later than the original ‘blue text’ press but I will not fall into the trap of claiming this to be a UK 1st – like so many others, because quite simply, it isn’t!

It is however, still an early issue and unlike the original US and other versions captures the hi-fidelity qualities Hendrix & Eddie Kramer spent so many hours perfecting way back in that hazy summer of 1968.  It’s generally acknowledged that the original UK mastering of this LP was the definitive production of the 1st Ladyland releases.

The fully laminated gatefold sleeve, manufactured by E.J Day & Co. Ltd has David Montgomery’s naked ladies photo and inside the gate has the large photo of Jimi on the left with the reduced size photos of Mitch & Noel underneath.  This is proven as the 4th UK version by the appearance of the Track logo underneath the track listing and credits text.  The overall grade of this sleeve is VG (Very Good).  The laminate, as in most Track sleeves falls a few mm short of the opening edges and around the perimeter of the inner gate but there is no lift or bubbling.  There is no writing, residue or stickers on the sleeve.  The spine is a good one – no splits or heavy rubbing.  There are some established creases – around a half dozen ‘thumb’ impressions, some near the spine edge, a few heavier ones around the front bottom right corner, and some lighter ones on the rear.  Opening edges are still quite sharp, although not fully.  There is also a 4-inch split to the rear bottom edge but this has been repaired.  No writing or stickers, corners still maintain pretty good definition.  Not perfect but how many UK Ladyland sleeves are?!

The labels bear the "Two Record Set (Set. No. 2657-001)" text.  Each face shows light to moderate, quite lazy spindle trails but that’s about it because other than that they are very fresh with sharp and bright text, no writing, stickers and no dulling or dirt/foxing spots.  Nice labels.

The sharp medium weight vinyl lies perfectly flat and is the best part of this copy.  The matrices are as follows:

Side A 613 008   B ^ 2   420   1  2   6

Side D 613 00##8   A//1    1    8?     7

Side B 613 009   A ^  2  420  1   1   8

Side C 613 009   B //  2  420  1   1   1   2

Both discs have some light (and I mean light) scuffs and small hairlines but these are few rather than many.  There’s some surface withdrawal traces as well but there are NO real scratches and nothing deep, ugly or untoward.  Look at the disc’s surfaces in normal light and you won’t pick up much – they look EX but examine more closely and you do pick up the surface blemishes.  Visually I’m grading both discs VG+ (Very Good Plus), they’ve been lightly played but not overused and they still look pretty.  THE WHOLE ALBUM HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and I’m happy to report that the playgrade is EX – this plays really well with little to fault.  I picked up some faint ticks to Side A, 1 light tick to Side B, 1 click and 1 pop to Side C and a few light ticks during the quiet passages of ‘1983’.  Some slight surface in the very quiet areas.  Other than these, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the audio on this vintage UK Track copy.  Many would grade higher.  No jumps or sticks throughout.  There is no distortion or groove wear and no loss of clarity or lack of definition to this most important historical LP.  Sounds great!

It’s ‘Electric Ladyland’.  It’s one of the greatest albums of all time.  It’s yours if you want it.  No reserve.
