A companion to his final studio album (Cry of Love), this is the final batch of recordings Jimi Hendrix completed before his death, and contains some of the last recordings he ever intended public to hear. In many ways, this really is a "Cry of Love, vol.2" album. Jimi's conversion from Fender to Gibson resulted in a clearer and sharper sound, which was much jazzier, but - alas - much less improvisational and spontaneous in nature. The songs assembled on this album are those which for technical or other reasons were not included in "Cry of love", issued posthumously in 1971, but probably should have been, because some of Hendrix best songs are here. Indeed,  some of these tracks were included in Hendrix’ legendary Woodstock performance. The songs are: Bleeding Heart - Highway Chile - Tax Free - Peter Gunn Catastrophe - Midnight - 3 little bears - Beginning – Isabella.

In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s , as the legal battle between Jimi Hendrix’ family and his long-time manager Allan Douglas heated up, we experienced the arrival of two revisionist pieces of history: The first, Allan Douglas’ "Voodoo Soup" album , which contains some of the material from WAR HEROES - and the second, a few years later , titled "The First Rays of the New Rising Sun", issued by Hendrix’ estate , claiming exactly the same thing, sporting some nice sound and plain godawful pseudo-psychedelic cover which would make Jimi make a triple salto-mortale in his grave. So far, nobody managed to find out what Jimi Hendrix’s true intentions were and how his final albums would have looked had he himself been involved in its release. WE DO KNOW, HOWEVER, that these are the last recordings Jimi did and that he intended most - if not all - of them to be included in his final album.

Jimi Hendrix left behind more unreleased material than just about any other rock artist. Some tracks have rated as all-time classics ("Angel," "Izabella," "Drifting," etc.), while others should have remained in the vaults (such as the full-length albums Crash Landing and Voodoo Soup, two collections that were near-criminally touched up by then-Hendrix keeper Alan Douglas). The out of print War Heroes is one of the few consistent compilations of unreleased Hendrix, and has since been replaced by First Rays of the New Rising Sun and South Saturn Delta. Highlights include "Beginning" (which contains a riff almost identical to the Stones' "Bitch"), "Highway Chile," and "Izabella," a track premiered on a Dick Cavett TV show a year before Hendrix's death. However, not all of the material is up to snuff, such as the nonsensical "Three Little Bears" and "Midnight," an overty indulgent instrumental. If you are a serious fan searching for some interesting obscurities, War Heroes is definitely worth the price.

Amazing !!! An unbelievable piece: What we have here is an unheard-of TEST PRESSING of this late- -period Jimi Hendrix classic.  While many test pressings often have alternate or demo- versions of known, later released songs, and while it is possible that this particular test pressing contains demo or alternate versions of some of the tracks, please don’t take our word that it does: Please note that the handwritten song timings on the sleeve differ slightly from the official 1972 Reprise release; the discrepancies are typically in the 3-4 seconds range and can probably be dismissed as a result of manual and imprecise time measurement; however, the discrepancy on "Beginnings" is significant (12 seconds: 4:13 on the official release, 4:25 on the test pressing) and is probably a result of the extended fade on the test pressing which was truncated on the official release

PLEASE NOTE: THIS TEST PRESSING APPARENTLY NEVER HAD A CUSTOM COVER;  THE ALBUM WILL BE SHIPPED IN A PLAIN, GENERIC [WHITE] CARDBOARD COVER. TEST PRESSINGS ARE RARELY – IF EVER – FOUND IN CUSTOM (STOCK) COVERS.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER : This reference pressing comes without any custom jacket, and will be shipped in its original plain, generic, white cardboard cover (NOT GRADED SEPARATELY)
