JIMMY BUFFETT: "YOU HAD TO BE THERE" 1978 ABC 5-SONG LIVE PROMO SAMPLER LP.
You Had to Be There was a live double album by Jimmy Buffett. This offering is not that record. Rather, it is a “sampler” of what is on that album. It was originally released in October 1978. It is the first Buffett live album and his tenth album overall. The album's material was taken from several concerts in August 1978 at Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA, and Maurice Gusman Cultural Center in Miami, FL. Mr. Buffett mentioned in interviews the album was recorded during a 'painful' time. He had broken his leg during the tour, and was performing in a cast, usually immobile, and taking painkillers to continue the performance.
This record is a so-called "Promo Copy.” Back in the day, a Promo Copy was a single record the record companies made available to radio stations, music publications and other media outlets to promote the song or an album. Such a single is usually recognized by promotion-specific terms stamped on the disc label or its cover like: "For Promotional Use Only" and "Not For Resale". They were supposed to be returned to the record company, or certified as destroyed, but promo copies of popular songs were often kept, typically by radio station employees. Here’s one by Mr. Buffett.
The record for sale was part of a collection of unusual Jimmy Buffett records that was assembled by a devout Parrot Head over a period of about thirty years. The record is somewhat out of the mainstream of Mr. Buffett’s records, and so likely appeals to collector assembling a full set of his U.S. recordings, or just want to hear songs you may not have heard - and your friends don’t have.
This record is the size of a typical U.S. long playing record (a/k/a an “LP”) at twelve (12) inches. It is vinyl and not shellac like 78 rpm records. This record has two sides. It comes in its original cardboard cover. The cover is not paper like the typical U.S. 45 rpm record. Inside is a blank sheet “dust cover.” Like most vintage ones, the sheet cover shows folds and cuts. The record covers all have shelf wear. As near as I can tell, no one in our Family ever played this record. It’s essentially as purchased. Please study the photos and feel free to ask any questions.
