Don’t let the postcard-generic cover art fool you, Summer Brings The Sunshine stands head and shoulders above nearly any major label country rock album crowding mid-’70s record bins. Next to the hundreds or even thousands of slick productions flowing out of Nashville and Los Angeles, Jimmy Carter scoured his rural Missouri surroundings for farmhands and semi-pros alike to lay down eight farm-isolated originals in 1977. Tasty female backing vocals, languid pedal steel, and feisty guitar licks abound on this exalted and near-peerless slice of Cosmic American Music.
"A favorite among 1970s rural rock aficionados, and not without reason as it hits all the right spots for the genre. About mid-point between Dead-New Riders and Harvest era Neil Young, with an understated back porch charm that creeps upon you over repeated plays. This is music at its most unassuming and least proselytizing, but the strong songwriting and overall coherence will draw attentive listeners into its intimate circle over time. A couple of terrific, dreamy tracks open the album while side 2 has some strong and almost commercial numbers in "Anyway" (which has excellent contemporary lyrics a la Neil) and "Let Me Be Your Player". The setting is typical '70s countryrock, with occasional and surprising use of organ and female backing vocals. The title-track is the most country-ish thing on board, while "Travelin'" hits a Relatively Clean Rivers vibe. The guitar-playing is as relaxed as everything else, and likely to appeal to fans of '70s Garcia. The front cover makes the LP look like some generic c & w album sold at gas stations, and it's fortunate that someone finally decided to give this impressive album a chance.
