Description

Pub Crawling’ with JIMMY DEUCHAR. CONTEMPORARY Records(C 3529). 1957. Mono. Deep Groove OG 1st Press.
Rear sleeve has detailed and informative notes from reviewer Tony Hall, writer Alun Morgan, and reviewer Edgar Jackson. About as good as it got in Brit jazz in 1955, as modernists were leading the musical progress away from the traditionalists.

To my simplistic ears, if it had a plunking banjo, major chords, and a marching rhythm, it was trad. There was a real civil war in British jazz circles back in 1950s (see Dave Gelly's book, An Unholy Row) - modernists versus traditionalists - updated in the 1960s as mods versus rockers, with R&B versus R&R supplanting jazz style preferences, basically. I don't think the 1950s UK jazzers ever got to the point of physical fighting, although 1950s rockers could be violent. Were the droogs in A Clockwork Orange originally Mods or Rockers? I go with Mockers (John Peel). They were just against society, period.

For interesting movies set in early 1960s London jazz/clubs, there's All Night Long (1962) and The Small World Of Sammy Lee (1963), with Kenny Graham's jazz score. Both are way more enjoyable and watchable than It's Trad, Dad, and a lingering gasp of the old, cool, seedy, Soho London before the city went global with the Stones, Who, Kinks, Yardbirds, Pretty Things, and the rest.

I write all this stuff just to try to paint a picture of where 1950s UK jazz was coming from, and why it evolved into different musical factions/preferences in subsequent decades. Jimmy Deuchar's early recordings were prime examples of UK modernist jazz in mid-1950s, and not that easy to find on vinyl, now.
