When Jimmy Hughes scored his 1964 hit with "Steal Away" on the Fame label, and later with "Everything About You" on Anna, little did he know that his regional chart-busting days were all but over -- though, as evidenced by this 1969 Volt LP, the quality of his work was as consistent as ever. The lone single from this set, "Ain't As Strong As I Used to Be," barely cracked the Top 100 of the Billboard chart, but it doesn't matter a whit historically. This is one of the finest soul records of 1969, period. Hughes and his crying vocal was the epitome of transcendent emotionalism in R&B. The 13 tracks included on Something Special, produced by Al Jackson, Jr., Al Bell, and Charles Chalmers, were scorching, deeply moving, in-the-groove, steamy love songs. This is the sound of Memphis as it moved from the gutbucket sound of the 1960s, and into the more ambitious light of the 1970s with its bigger productions featuring gorgeous melds of strings, electric pianos, warm guitars, and huge backing choruses. As for standout tracks, the single is one to be sure, but it's "I'm Not Ashamed to Beg or Plead," by Eddie Floyd, and the Isaac Hayes and David Porter-penned "What Side of the Door," that really shine. This is only available on CD from Japan, but it's worth whatever you pay for it.. Jimmy Hughes stopped recording by the mid-'70s, but the small legacy of recordings he left behind stand head and shoulders with virtually everything else now regarded as classic about that period's soul music.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a minor 'bump' (dent) on the opening side ; The dent was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape  (visible on both sides)

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Some shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has a small, round, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
