Description
On offer is a 1969 LP by JODY GRIND called One Step On, on TRANSATLANTIC, catalogue number TRA 210. The first Jody Grind album is a freewheeling fusion of Brit psychedelia - circa 1969 - and Brit jazz (most evident in the horn fanfares from an uncredited brass section), with lots of freak-out guitar from lVAN ZAGNI and Emerson-style Hammond-organ bothering by TIM HINKLEY (later of Vinegar Joe and Hinkley’s Heroes). Drummer BARRY WILSON completed the line-up.
PROVENANCE - This album comes from the collection of BILL LEADER, the legendary folk producer who is happily still with us (it’s not an estate thing). Transatlantic at the time specialised in folk (Stray were the only other rock group on their roster) and Bill was an active freelance producer for the label. One can picture the scene: Bill chances to visit the office during the press launch of One Step On by Jody Grind. Copies of the album are being freely dispensed to members of the press corps along with liquid refreshments, and Bill graciously accepts a copy. Not a great one for hairy-arsed psychedelic rock, it remains on his shelf, until his would-be biographer (i.e. me) notices it and they cut a deal. Hence…
The vinyl is mint, with shiny grooves, no scratches, no scuffmarks, no sticking and no background noise. The labels are excellent, with no spindlewear. The gatefold laminate sleeve is mint, with edges sharp enough to draw blood and absolutely no ringwear. The only sign of age is a yellowing on the edge of the original inner-sleeve, where it has been exposed to sunlight. This has not affected the cardboard cover in the least. This rare LP has been preserved in original pristine state by Bill, known as a custodian of folk and now a keeper of psychedelia.
