Brief Info: The first of two albums this superb jazzy prog-rock band made – both are rare and hard to find. This my first copy for a long time. An album a little out-of-character for Transatlantic which is better known for folk music. Still in 1968, the label took on Zappa’s ‘Uncle Meat’ album, and although this one is not quite as out-there as that, this is still pretty full-on prog. A lovely album with spectacular cover artwork, this copy does it near full justice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with front and back laminate. The inside is matt and unprotected with smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Lamination – Front & Back: The outside spooky artwork is seen to high advantage under still very shiny, fresh and clear laminate that has only a couple of small lifts on the front. Very few creases at all and any dulling seen under light very light, mostly around the record shape on the back that few will avoid totally. Rich deep colour to the graphic, this has a superb visual impact as I guess it was meant to.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Spectacular colourful artwork that still looks fantastic as I hope my pictures show, hardly any wear at all. A little light end burring being quite critical.

Top Edges: Both laminated folds have barely any hint of wear. The card on the front end panel is a little proud in manufacture, so this has thickened as seen more viewed end-on.

Bottom Edges: Both immaculate and still retain super-shine and straightness.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with a natural recess sinkage of the text that is all still fully present. Some spines do this, and most all will be the same on this cover. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A small surface crack near the bottom corner as seen on my picture, but little else to fault with the laminate still very smooth and fresh.

Corners: Actual tip wear is very little and light with very fine to near excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this rare late 1960s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors, being a poor-selling album, this rarely shows up.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner that has ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text. Two pristine window circles and minimal creasing, just one very small edge seam split I carefully and neatly repaired to stop the risk of it widening in the future.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with only modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare and top-quality prog-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal with any traces being very infrequent and light, overall a very clean pressing for a label that sometimes could prove variable. Few copies will outperform this early first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Perhaps not for the absolute visual and audio perfectionist, but this sets a high standard for an album with highly complex and full-on sound. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
