During the early '60s, the contentious critical reaction to John Coltrane's music got so over-the-top that some reactionaries branded his work with Eric Dolphy as "anti-jazz." Having already recorded the exploratory AFRICA/BRASS and LIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD, Coltrane went along with producer Bob Thiele's suggestion that he do an album of BALLADS to silence nay-sayers once and for all.
BALLADS, DUKE ELLINGTON & JOHN COLTRANE and JOHN COLTRANE AND JOHNNY HARTMAN for a triptych of "traditional" recordings, italicizing the saxophonist's ability to swing in a classic vein, while underscoring his sensitivity as a ballad player. He even managed to impress the moldy fig who penned the original liner notes to BALLADS.
From the gentle opening strains of "Say It (Over And Over Again)," the saxophonist imparts all the tender yearning and romantic empathy of a mature, compassionate adult. Given his predilection for technical complexities, Coltrane avoids any hint of emotional grandstanding, allowing only for subtle melodic embellishments. On "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "What's New" he displays a glorious tone, achieving a remarkably human vocal timbre in the upper registers, indulging in more pronounced harmonic variations, as the Tyner-Garrison-Jones rhythm axis subtly shifts gears to accomodate these intricacies. Without straying far from the basic themes or giving in to cheap sentiment, the saxophonist sustains a gorgeous melodic focus throughout BALLADS, marking this recital as another John Coltrane masterpiece.

JOHN COLTRANE & JOHNNY HARTMAN 180 GRAM

On March 7, 1963 Coltrane and Hartman had decided on 10 songs for the record album, but en route to the studio they heard Nat King Cole on the radio performing "Lush Life", and Hartman immediately decided that song had to be included in their album. The legendary compilation was made that same day at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Each song was done in only one take, except for "You Are Too Beautiful."

The album has become an instant jazz classic, and the renditions of "Lush Life", "My One and Only Love", and "They Say It's Wonderful" are considered definitive.

The first section, entitled "Acknowledgement", has a forceful bass line which runs throughout the whole work. The powerful sound increases in intensity, whereby the bass motif undergoes constant modulation, with John Coltrane's meditative singing creating immense tension. In "Resolution" Coltrane's powerful, quasi hymn-like expression comes to the fore, with McCoy Tyner achieving equal intensity in his solo.

"Pursuance", with its density, quick-as-lightning runs and block chords, gives us a taste of John Coltrane's later 'free' phase.

"Psalm" is filled with the famous, almost static melodies rather like a fervent prayer which are so typical for John Coltrane.

"A Love Supreme" has been a faithful companion and teacher of generations of saxophonists and its message goes way beyond Music and is still valid today.

John Coltrane was and remains one of jazz's most lyrical players and CRESCENT originally released in 1964, displays that lyricism in its most lovely and passionate forms.

The beautiful melodys are displayed most affectingly on "Wise One" and on "Lonnie's Lament." The title cut contains a tour-de-force solo that shows just how much drama a master player can achieve in the space of four or five minutes of improvisation. "Bessie's Blues" is an exciting straight-ahead attack, and the "Drum Thing" showcases Elvin Jones' great talent and connection with Coltrane's music.

Seldom do albums achieve such coherency of form, and the credit for this goes not only to John Coltrane (who composed all the tunes), but to the rest of the great quartet. McCoy Tyner has a wonderful shimmering solo on "Wise One," and Jimmy Garrison contributes a fine bass statement on "Lonnie's Lament."

Great choice for the listener who is interested in exploring Coltrane's career or for the jazz fan who is search of 40 minutes of unadulterated pleasure.
