Brief Info: Regarded by many, including myself (for what it’s worth), as the greatest rock bass-player ever. His bass playing style and sound with The Who is legendary and was often described as the ‘Hendrix of the bass’. This was his first album under the name ‘Ox’, and fourth ‘solo’ album overall. This one follows on where his third album, the rock n roll pastiche set ‘Rigor Mortis Sets In’ left off. It proved less successful and somewhat ignored making it his most elusive album. A complete original with the date-coded inner sleeve, the lyric insert sheet, and the large poster which is unmounted and immaculate as-seen. The record owned from new by one person, it appears hardly used and sounds fantastic. An absolute first issue and finding it better will prove beyond difficult.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this being very critical. An unlaminated single format with matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. Includes the date-coded inner sleeve, poster and lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front & Back: This album from the same collection as the other Entwistle album I am offering. The front has a tiny sticker pull/residue trace and tiny corner crease, but little else. The back has little to fault either, any hint of rubbing faint as seen under light. There is a tiny nick on the entrance (look hard).

Top Edge: Straight, thin and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Again straight, some rubbing mostly near the ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening light as seen viewed end-on. As stated, a tiny nick, but look hard. Record enters on this edge and are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal traces of compression. All text is perfect and unworn, also perfectly centred, the surface clean and fresh with the odd fine hairline or crinkle trace.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light with mostly excellent shape retained with just a tiny mild dink on the bottom tip.

Cover Summary: A very fine all-round example of this rather full-on 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find better. This fresh, little blemished item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: the Decca polylined inner is superb and hardly aged with barely any trace of discolouration to the paper. Two crisp window circles, the clear polylining intact. No creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly, this is correctly date-coded 11-74 (November 1974), so manufactured within a couple of months prior to the album’s release in February 1975.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: MINT: printed both sides and guaranteed original, a matt surface lyric sheet printed in England by Record Graphics Ltd. This is fresh and pristine with nothing to fault at all.

The Poster: PRACTICALLY MINT: a large original poster, printed one side, the back is white, clean and fresh. It has a matt surface again and is unmounted (e.g. no pin-holes or tape marks), also immaculately folded. Any blemishes minuscule under light, this is superb again and is often missing altogether. An elusive poster, especially in this fantastic condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this being ultra critical for a record that has hardly been played. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed on high quality Decca vinyl. Any surface traces wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. Very gentle inner sleeve dulling seen critically under light, a trait for records stored inside their original polylined inners and not removed for many years. I doubt if this record has seen light-of-day for decades. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers, this is a fantastic record that plays little short of perfectly. Visually a super copy that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce original album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality record. It will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
